Upcoming: VH1 Rock Honors the Who at UCLA Tonight

July 12th, 2008 Written by: Matt· No Comments

thewho08-07-13The third installment of VH1’s lifetime achievement show, Rock Honors, tapes Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion. Unlike in years past, this year’s show will honor just one band, or at least what’s left of it, The Who. The previous two editions of the show taped in Las Vegas, but this year’s edition tapes here in L.A.

The Who were formed in mid-1960s England and were most famous at the time for their destructive antics on stage. However, they soon became one of the key bands in the British invasion with their debut album, My Generation. They followed this up with a number of other famous albums, including their “rock opera,” Tommy. The band stayed famous and popular through most of the ’70s, but was hard hit by the death of iconic drummer Keith Moon in 1978. The rest of the band remained together until 1983 until they decided to call things off. Just before what was to be a reunion tour in 2002, bassist John Entwistle was found dead from a heart attack.

As one of the most iconic bands in rock history, the Who have obviously had an enormous influence on many of today’s best-known bands, some of which will come to Westwood to pay tribute to them this weekend. Incubus, Tenacious D, Pearl Jam, the Foo Fighters, the Flaming Lips, and what is remaining of the Who will all perform. Some of these bands are regulars at these types of big TV events, but some are not and are certainly at the show in order to honor a band influential in their own careers.

Front man Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend (he of the famous windmill guitar style) are all that remain of the original Who lineup, but they are the two who had the most commercial success in their solo careers of the original foursome. Both have undertaken extensive charity work during and after their time with the Who, but Daltrey has had a less checkered existence. Townshend pleaded guilty to child pornography charges in 2002 and has suffered massive hearing loss as a result of having spend so much time listening to and playing extremely loud music over the years.

It’s amazing that there’s anything left of the Who after the years the band spend living life in the fast lane, and Saturday night will be a great chance to see Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend back at work, along with so many other great bands who will provide their own takes on Who songs.

Tickets to the show, Saturday night at 8, are $65 to $300.

The show airs July 17th 9/8c
