Sports: What Baron Davis Means to the Clippers

July 12th, 2008 Written by: Greg Bergman· No Comments

Sigh. The Clippers.Every time you think they are getting close to getting back on track, the curse of Donald Sterling bites them where it hurts the most. The wallet.

Baron Davis is coming home after signing a multi-year contract with LA’s other team. After playing his high school ball at Crossroads in Santa Monica, Baron moved just a few miles down the road to Westwood and UCLA. He was ecstatic to play again for his hometown fans.

Too bad the happiness was short lived.

The idea was that Davis would join star forward Elton Brand and push the Clippers into the elite class of the Western Conference. Elton had other ideas.Brand, after hearing of Davis coming to LA, decided to move out East and play for the Philadelphia 76ers. His reason being that the frugal Clipper owner, Sterling, was not honest in the amount of cash he had available. Shocking, I know.

So, now Baron will lead a young Clipper team to where they are most well known. The cellar. All is not lost for Billy Crystal’s favorite NBA team, though. The bearded wonder will still bring many benefits to this lowly franchise. Unfortunately, those benefits will sit stagnant in Mr. Sterling’s pocketbook.

Baron is a hometown kid and, when healthy, he is one of the most electrifying point guards in the league. Because of this, he will bring in a lot of new fans. With these bandwagoners come raised ticket sales, jerseys and any other Clipper paraphernalia.

The state of Clipper Nation may still be a work in progress, but with the addition of Davis, they are on the right track. It’s sad that the NBA’s version of Al Davis had to blow his chances at a real contender. Most would think that playing in LA at Staples Center would be a dream come true. The gorgeous beaches, equally beautiful women and the perfect weather year round just isn’t the same anymore. Unless, of course, you are playing for the purple and gold of the Lakers.

Baron will try and restore the faith of Clipper fans, but unless he can convince Sterling to stop being a shiesty swindler, his legacy will be forever tarnished.

Sigh.
