Full-time student, journalist, and sports enthusiast, Justin brings a male’s perspective on L.A. Street Fashion.

What is L.A. street fashion to you?

L.A. street fashion = giving a damn about what other people think.

How has this city changed your style?

Honestly, this city has F’ed my style up. Wait, I take that back. This city has F’ed my wallet up! Why does all the “cool” stuff have to be so damn expensive? My clothes are always two years late because I wait until they go on clearance before I buy ‘em. I used to think I was cool in a Nautica jacket and jeans. But I guess that’s out of style now, isn’t it?

What’s the most played-out trend in L.A.?

Ed Hardy. I thought it was cool for a minute but I quickly grew out of it. Spending over 35 bucks for a t-shirt is ridiculous, man. So when I go to a store like Nordstrom Rack and see an Ed Hardy shirt for no less than $45, I know it’s some B.S. But don’t get me wrong. I’m not knockin’ Christian Audigier. I think the man is a genius and I respect him for makin’ his paper. But come on. $85 for a t-shirt that shrinks every time you throw it in the dryer?! That’s just crazy.

Elton Brand Clippers jerseys are played out as well.

What trend do you hope/think will last for awhile?

I hope white t-shirts never go out of style. I just bought three packs of white t-shirts the other week.

What’s something you see happening in the future of L.A. fashion?

I expect to see a lot of Baron Davis Clippers jerseys worn in the next year or two. He recently signed with the Clips and he’s gonna do some big things for us. All the Laker fans are gonna jump on the band wagon once the Clips start rolling. Jack Nicholson, Snoop Dogg … they all gonna be sportin’ the B. Diddy jersey next season. I also expect high-top fades to make a come back thanks to Brandon Jennings. Educate yourself if you don’t know who Brandon Jennings is.

What do you wear on a daily basis?

I’m not gonna lie. I alternate between two pairs of pants every week. I wear my one and only pair of Seven jeans on Monday and Wednesday and I wear my one and only pair of Rock & Republics on Tuesday and Thursday. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I wear whatever smells best. I like fooling strangers into thinking that I have a lot of money. Like I said before, I believe that L.A. street fashion is about giving a damn about what other people think. And yes, I want people to think I have a lot of money when I sport my Sevens and Rock & Republics. I’m gonna be pissed when my pants start to fade because I’ll have to break into my life savings to buy some again.

JustinTN208-07-13How does being a writer and/or college student influence your style?

For the most part, being a college student allows me to throw things on that I feel comfortable in. Since it’s summer right now, I usually wear a Chargers or Clippers jersey with my expensive jeans to keep it ‘hood and snobby at the same time. When I’m in the newsroom, I attempt to look presentable by wearin’ one of the four long sleeve button-ups in my closet.

If you were to switch wardrobes with a celebrity, who would it be? Why?

I’d like to browse Will Smith’s closet for an hour two. Ever since I saw the movie “Hitch,” I always thought he wore some fly gear. I think I’d become quite the looker if I wore some of the stuff in his wardrobe. I wouldn’t dare touch his underwear drawer though. Yuck!

Who’s the best dressed woman in Hollywood?

That’s a tough question. I don’t watch television and say to myself, “Wow, so and so dresses beautifully.” I usually focus on women who are less-dressed instead of best dressed. I know that’s shallow, but I’m just being real. I suppose Lauren Conrad of The Hills dresses nice though. I once saw her in person at Barnes & Noble and thought she looked real exquisite.

What’s the best fashion advice you’ve ever received?

To turn my drawls inside out when I fail to do laundry for a couple weeks. Haha. I’m playin’, I’m playin’.

Give me your top three shopping spots in L.A.

Champs, Loehmann’s Men’s Store, and Old Navy. I’m always tryin’ to buy new Chargers gear and Champs stocks up on it often. When I know a big event is coming up, I skip eating and save my lunch money so I can buy something nice at Loehmann’s. And Old Navy is typically my first stop when I shop because it’s affordable and I like their solid tees.
