Soccer: It’s a Plane, It’s a Bird…It’s the SuperLiga!

Soccer SUPERLIGADS-08-13-06The second edition of the SuperLiga is now underway after the inaugural matches were played over the weekend. Eight teams will battle against each other to win the coveted trophy and the pride of North America.

But what exactly is the SuperLiga?

It may not be as big as the World Cup or the recently played Eurocup. But the SuperLiga is a new and exciting tournament that lets Major League Soccer teams have a chance to play competitive soccer against clubs of a different country.

It’s basically a duel between Mexico and the United States. Four teams from each country competing for the cup. This year the New England Revolution, Houston Dynamo, D.C. United and Chivas USA will represent the United States. Chivas de Guadalajara, who is the inspiration for the creation of Chivas USA, Santos, Atlante and defending champions Pachuca are the Mexican representatives.

The champion will also receive a cool $1 million prize. Not that it matters because we all know that professional athletes don’t compete for money, right?

So far, the first four games have been played with two wins for each country. Both Houston and New England were victorious against Atlante and Santos respectively. On the other hand, Chivas USA fell against Pachuca and D.C. United was beaten by Mexico’s Chivas

The tournament promises even-paired matches filled with intensity and a growing rivalry between the teams from these two neighboring countries.

The final game will be played Tuesday, August 5th and we’ll see if the winner will celebrate with Jose Cuervo or Bud Light.
