LA.CityZine brings you LA band, Low vs. Diamond, as part of our Know Your LA Bands series. Young and fresh always go together but the combination isn’t always appealing. Sometimes the newest fads can be the one of the worst inventions in history. However, Low vs. Diamond is definitely an appealing example of the young and fresh. They bring you a new sense of musical enjoyment that is real as Serge Gainsbourg but classic as Burt Bacharach and The Beatles combined. With a trace of Julian Casablancas vocals and lyrics that are simple but poignant, Low vs. Diamond lights a fire under your feet to start a dance party to celebrate the good times and the heartbreaks. Driving beats, guitar riffs you can’t ignore and harmonies complete the idea of Low vs. Diamond.
What is exactly is the idea of Low vs. Diamond? Well, their debut self-titled album just came out and they are raking in the good reviews for more than just the LA band they seem to be at first. Hailing from all over the nation, the guys of Low vs. Diamond put out an album that is mature and personable. With tracks that are major potential radio hits but intricate enough to really have the true fan credibility, these guys give you the good drama. Still want to get a better idea? Check out the interview below with lead vocalist, Lucas Field.
Â
Could you give a brief description of your band?
Think 70’s songwriter meets 90’s rock band.
What was the first record/CD/tape you ever bought? And where did you buy it?
Firehouses’ single at Bartell Drugs in Seattle.
How long have you been playing music and how many instruments can you play?
I’ve been playing music since I was in high school and I play guitars and piano, but everyone in the band is better than me at every instrument!

What’s the best cure for a hangover?
An NYC bacon egg and cheese and a Coca-Cola classic.
How do you get ready for a live show?
Lock myself off from everyone. I like to be alone with the band and then I remember why I wrote the song… and I usually have some of Grandpa’s medicine.
What’s your favorite song to play live?
“Killer B.”
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Swingtown on CBS.com
Dead or alive; What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival?
I look at more like who would I want to see than play with Opening band: Low vs. Diamond, then The Grateful Dead 1977, Pearl Jame 1992, The Doors â any era probably after the second record, Pink Floyd â any era, and Bob Marley â Babylon by Bus Tour close out the the night That would be a pretty good show.
How did you come up with the name for your band? How many names did you have to go through before deciding on this one? What were some of the other contenders?
We started as Nineteen Eighty Four, then we were Colored Shadows. Finally, we liked the name Diamond but we wanted a name that was like some sort of dramatic novel or something. So Low and the Diamond was originally going to be it. However we decided on Low vs. Diamond and the rest is history. Plus, that’s like comparing Bowie’s Low and Diamond Dogs!
If you could rid the world of one song, what would it be?
The Cars’ song, “Drive.” It reminds me of being at a Denny’s restaurant around 11:30 on a school night at 10 with my recently separated father asking if I wanted a grand slam while there were all these old depressing people sitting at the counter drinking coffee. In the background, that song was playing.
Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
Tom Cruise
What messages do you hope your songs send out to listeners?
Hopefully, they get stories about things they can relate to in their own lives.
What was your favorite venue for a show?
The Troubadour in LA
What’s your most memorable experience on the road story?
Most memorable, not sure The thought that pops into my head a lot these days is If we sell a lot of merch tonight, maybe we’ll get to stay at a Holiday Inn Express. If not, Days Inn, it is.
What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you and did you take notice?
Someone once told me Sinatra said, “Performing is like hitting on a lady. It’s when you don’t care that they like you You try too hard and they’re outta there!”
What would be your perfect LA day?
8am: Coffee at Jones on Third It’s strong and satisfying.
10am â 1pm: Come up with this amazing idea on piano and record it so I don’t forget it.
3pm: Take a dip at some random artist’s house in the hills and maybe hear some stories
5pm: Take a quick shower. Hop over to El Coyote for a Margarita but no food
6:30: Shower again. (It does get hot here and I like my showers.) Get ready for dinner at Sake House or maybe even Roku at 7:30. (If it’s a perfect day, they use real crab in their California Rolls.)
10pm: Low vs. Diamond goes on to a sold out Greek Theatre show.
2am: Tucked in bed with my baby and a KitKat
Goodnight!
What would be the best compliment someone could give you about your music?
They love it For real.

My friends, my lady and my family.
