- 5 killed, 3 missing when car crashed in canal - Authorities have identified the five people killed when a septic truck collided with an SUV carrying farmworkers and both vehicles plunged into an irrigation canal. The victims were identified as Luis Perez, 45, of Merced; and Eulalia Garcia, 34, Isaac Tapia, 16, Adan Martinez, 22, Elizar Cruz, 19, all of Lod. Perez and Garcia died from fresh-water drowning; autopsies are pending on the others. Four of the dead were farmworkers, and family members told authorities they believe that others are still missing.
- Man wounded in car fire - An unidentified man has been hospitalized with minor injuries after an unknown arsonist set an abandoned vehicle on fire in Huntington Park. The flames then jumped to a yard and a business where the victim was working. Approximately 75 firefighters put down the blaze in roughly 40 minutes. A man who was working inside the business — a powder coating and paint manufacturer — sustained minor burns and minor smoke inhalation. He was transported to a hospital, and was expected to survive.
- Two men arrested for starting 24 fires -Two men are in jail for allegedly touching off two dozen Long Beach neighborhood fires — including 14 during a five-hour period. Surveillance video and bragging led to Tuesday’s arrests of Caldrin Benitez and Juan Alvarez. The 22-year-old men allegedly torched vehicles and set fire to trash bins and old mattresses. No one was hurt. The flames didn’t spread to homes.
- Man pleads not guilty to burning his children to death - Dae Kwon Yun, 57, is accused of placing his daughter, Ashley, and son, Alexander, inside his Toyota Sequoia on April 2, 2006, and setting it on fire in a secluded alley in the LA Garment District. Yun, who was found outside the vehicle by responding firefighter. He suffered several second and third degree burns. Detectives believe Yun had financial and marital problems. He and his wife, Sun Ok Ma, separated about two weeks before the fire.
- Man arrested after domestic dispute -An LAPD SWAT team arrested a domestic violence suspect who barricaded himself for several hours Wednesday in Woodland Hills. Officers were sent to Hartland Street and Platt Avenue late Wednesday morning. The man was arrested shortly before 2 p.m., and no injuries were reported. His name has not been released.
