What happens when you mix She Wants Revenge with Death Cab for Cutie? You get the Republic Tigers. I’ve been listening to this record constantly for a while now - one, because it’s really good, and two, because I can’t get enough of it. I’ve been obsessed!
I have a right to be, though.
I’ve spent the last few months catching up on Grey’s Anatomy, and one night, while watching an episode, I heard a familiar song that I couldn’t put my finger on. I Googled it, and to my delight, it was The Republic Tigers’ Buildings and Mountains, a song about questioning the purpose of life and watching as time passed right before our eyes. Buildings and Mountains is the title track on their debut album, Keep Color.
An interesting choice for the album was the second song, Golden Sand, in which lead singer Kenn Jankowski’s voice mimics that of Justin Warfield (She Wants Revenge). The beat picks up in the song, and I found myself bouncing my head up and down as I listened to the song over and over again. The stylistic progression of music as the album continued made me realize that these guys were serious. No commercial pop. No limited vocabulary. No two songs were alike! These guys need to get bigger, and fast.
