So before I start on the on-sales for this weekend, I wanted to give you a little heads up on something cool that is taking place (which I learned thanks to Ben Werner of the OC Register- where I get most of my on sale news from anyway- they do good work over there, what can I say). Super-Hyper-Mega-corporate concert giant Live Nation has decided to give fans a break on some of the summers hottest (or most struggling and undersold?) concerts with a $10 “Fan Appreciation Day” sale. That’s right: for one day only tickets some of your favorite (or not) concerts will be on-sale for only $10. This of course does not count service or facilities fees (which will easily double the ticket prices) and the tickets will be in the back of the venue, but it’s still a pretty good deal. While a lot of country and middle of the road rock acts are included, there are a few decent shows included in the list:
- The Download Festival 2008- July 20th at Gibson Amphitheater
- Less Than Jake/ Goldfinger- July 25th at the Wiltern LG
- Rock the Bells- August 9th at San Manuel Amphitheater (previously Glen Helen Pavilion)
- Reggie & The Full Effect- August 26th at The Avalon
- Stars- October 2nd at HOB- Anaheim
You can find a full list here.
All of these specials begin Friday (today) at 10am and will last until 11:59pm that night). While it’s probably just a way to unload some expensive, mostly unsellable concert tickets on the concert public, it’s still kinda cool. And with the sagging economy it’s a nice gesture for people who can’t afford a $35 lawn ticket (oh, I mean “slowly rebounding economy”, sorry Mr. Bush).
Anyway, here are some on sales for this weekend.
- I guess I had no idea how big The Rocket Summer have gotten lately (weren’t they just playing Chain Reaction and the Roxy last year?). The band (headed by mastermind Bryce Avery) will headline the Grove of Anaheim on September 11th with the should-be-headlining Phantom Planet opening along with The Secret Handshake and Morning Light. Tickets are $17.50 and go on sale Saturday.
- Also playing the Grove are the crazy/profane/brilliant electro-punks Mindless Self Indulgence. The band-o-misfits play the venue October 1st and tickets go on sale this weekend for around $25.
- Maybe I’m the only one on planet earth to be excited about this, but the Toadies are hitting Southern California for the first time in about 5 years. I know, I know, it was the mid-ninties when they came out with their very underrated “Rubberneck” album, and their picture isn’t exactly sitting next to the “cool” entery in the Oxford Dictionary, but they were just always a solid rock band who wrote good songs. For curiosity sake, is there anyone else out there who feels this way and is going to join me September 13th at the House of Blues Anaheim? Please leave me a comment so that I know I am not alone. By the way, for clarification sake, this is not me looking for a date or something, it’s purely scientific. I’m happily taken and not looking for anyone new plus I would so break your heart in a way that you might never recover from. Just ask Lauren Conrad. By the way, tickets are cheap at $14 so you might have a little left over to take me out for coffee afterwards you know, as friends.
- Moving on, it’s just been added, but please note that Dillinger Escape Plan is playing Chain Reaction in Anaheim. The band will play the venue on August 6th, and tickets are on sale, if not already sold out by the time you read this. The show is $13 and you can buy them via the Chain Reaction website for only $1.96 service charge.
Other on-sales this weekend:
- The Who are coming back to L.A. for two shows at the Nokia Theater. They are playing November 8th and 9th and tickets are $67.50-$130 and go on sale at 10am.
- Martina McBride headlines the Go Country 105’s “Too Hot For Summer” (must be really hot) at Verizon Wireless Ampitheater on August 16th .Tickets are $21-$91 and goes on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. Yee-haw.
- Queens of the Stone Age will celebrate the life of former collaborator Natasha Shneider who died of cancer in early July. The benefit, which takes place August 16th, will help cover the cost of her cancer treatment and will feature special guests PJ Harvey, Tenacious D, Jesse Hughes and Brody Dalle. Tickets are $100 dollars, but any chance to see PJ Harvey and Tenacious D in the same small venue seems well worth it. They go on sale Saturday at 10am.
- Sci-fi rockers Coheed & Cambria will play each one of their albums from front to back with four shows at the Avalon in November. The album will perform “The Second Stage Turbine Blade” on November 5th; “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3″ on November 6, “Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Maddness” on November 7th, and “Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World For Tomorrow” on November 8th. What, no “Quantum of Solace”? Tickets go on sale today and each date is $25.
