If you’re looking for something to do tonight, you might want to check out Glow at the Santa Monica Pier. Glow is a massive event that brings together a collection of very unique artists to create an interactive exhibition of light and sound. It’s based on a similar event in Paris called Nuit Blanche and, according to the website, takes its spirit from the fabled grunion that come ashore several times a year to spawn in the sand, creating a fleeting luminescence.
For twelve hours through the night, high tech exhibits will be set up on the north and south sides of the Pier, on the Pier itself, in Palisades Park, and two blocks into Santa Monica. There will be an exhibit that measures the electromagnetic emotional signals coming from the brains of participants, converts the emotions to colored lights, then projects the colors onto a massive canvas, creating a real-time visual representation of the emotions of the crowd. There will be another light exhibit set up on the pier stairs that reflects the motions of the tide. A planetarium exhibit will involve pictures of LA projected on the ceiling; the floor will be covered with cushions, encouraging people to lay down and look at the “stars.” A marine tumbleweed exhibit will consist of marine litter illuminated by tiny bulbs and set adrift around the Pier.
It all sounds incredibly interesting, and it’s going on all night so you can just drop by whenever you have a chance. The website is very helpful as far as parking and scheduling info goes. There’s even a map showing where all the exhibits are.
