CD Review: Beat Union “Disconnected”

July 20th, 2008 Written by: Joelle· No Comments

Its title, Disconnected, reflects a detached disenchantment with the stress and complications involved in the hyperconnectedness of the digital age. This disconnection, along with classic love and coming-of-age entanglements, embodies the central theme to the solid debut album of British pop punk band, Beat Union. In exploration of the ups and downs of young adult life, the lyrics’ relevancy to today’s media- and Internet-driven youth culture puts an ultra modern spin on familiar subject matter. Similarly the catchy guitar riffs, enlivening drums, and adamant vocals find a fresh take on a familiar punk rock sound.

The album jump-starts with the invigorating title track. Group vocals rally up an energy that stems from the acceptance of a difficult reality; “Maybe I’m just out of place in the modern world.” A listen to this song is sure to amp up an inspiration to get outside and live without the crippling crutches of the cyberworld. A line likely to resonate with the masses “You live your life online. I’ll pull the plug and live mine.” pretty much sums up the song’s message. Along the same vein, the increasingly blurred separation between emotional and electronic communication makes way for clever wordplay in “Stay On The Line,” an easy to relate and sing along to track.

Despite trudging through some angsty territory, a consistent uplifting tone is maintained throughout the album. “Pressure Zone” and “Calling” both assure those struggling to find their path that “It’s alright. You’re not alone”. A few love anthems are also scattered throughout, from poppy blood-pumping “My Heart Starts Beating” and “Dancing In Our Sleep,” to “Johnny Loves JoJo” a cute punk rock lament about a couple frowned upon by society. A secret track at the end of the album remixes earlier song “Can’t Stop The Radio” by slowing it down and giving it a reggae flair. This mellowed-out effect is surprisingly perfect for the song, making it one of the most enjoyable listens on the album.

Beat Union is currently touring the United States as a part of Vans Warped Tour 2008. If you dig their music, be sure to catch them when the show comes to Los Angeles on August 17th at the Home Depot Center! Tickets are $30.25 - Buy now
