Things to do in LA: Eat a Diddy Riese sandwich.

Diddy Riese cookie sandwich.Word on the street is the economy isn’t doing so well. So, I’m always writing about sales, which is kind of saving money, but kind of not, because, well, it’s still more shopping. For once, I’m offering something to do (yes, the act of eating this treat qualifies as an event) that don’t cost an arm and a leg, or an arm, or a leg, or much at all for that matter!

A perfect example of an idea so simple but SO wonderful is Diddy Reise. By simple, I mean cookies and ice cream. By amazing, I mean, well, you’ll just have to try one of their cookie sandwiches to find out. But to give you an idea, you select a kind of cookie for each side of your sandwich. I’m not going to deny that I have them memorized, but I’ll just list a few - peanut butter, chocolate chip walnut, white chocolate macadamia, cinnamon-sugar, chocolate chip, dark chocolate macadamia, candy chocolate chip.. okay, I just listed them all. Anyway. Then, you choose your flavor of ice cream, which will be shoved in between the two, baked fresh every morning cookies (trust me, I’ve seen the guys there at 7 am baking on my way to work, and I’ve even seen people ordering the ice cream sandwiches at, like, 10 am. Crazy!). And voila, you have your own totally unique creation for your enjoyment.

Sounds so cute and simple, a nice little treat, right? But the thing ends up being so massive they put it in an ice cream cup for you. The best part of it all is that the entire friggin’ thing is $1.25. I’ve heard many fellow UCLA students complain that, now that Diddy raised their prices from $1 to $1.25 (for the sandwich,) it’s just “soo not worth it” anymore. Because they now have to reach allll the way into their coin purse and grab a quarter? I strongly disagree and maintain that $1.25 is still a great deal for a more than great dessert.

They never get old, and if they do, then you can order a surprisingly AMAZING brownie (walnut or plain), or just the ice cream, or three cookies (you pick the flavors) for $1. And apparently there’s hot dogs too. Bizarre. And I forgot to mention you can even order a mini carton of milk with your cookies. Cute, right?

Located in Westwood Village and guaranteed to have a line halfway down the street on at least half of the evenings of the week, Diddy Reise is absolutely worth your time and definitely not overrated. Overly sweet, maybe, if you get the white chocolate macadamia cookie with chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, but hey, some people love that combination. Just not me. My secret favorite? Candy chocolate chip with Reese’s Peanut Butter ice cream in between. Almost disgustingly ridiculous, but surprisingly good.

Located at 926 Broxton Ave., Los Angeles, 90024. (310) 208-0448.

PS: To save even more pennies, snag a bag of their day-old cookies, which are discounted even more than the already gloriously priced treats.

Mind-twister for the day: is it a cookie sandwich or an ice cream sandwich? Hmm..
