Today, July 21st: Josh Hartnett is an All-American Hollywood cutie [bred in Minnesota]. He’s been listed as one of People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People, Teen People’s 21 Hottest Stars Under 21. His breakthrough role as Jamie Lee Curtis’ son in Halloween: H20 propelled him into a steady stream of big-time features including Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down. Did we mention he’s a cutie?
July 22nd: Rufus Wainwright was born on July 22 to folk singing Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III. His first studio album Rufus Wainwright [creative title, I think not?] was released in 1988 in Los Angeles. Rolling Stone Magazine referred to it as one of the best new albums of the year and recognized the singer as “Best New Artist” of the year. Although he battled meth addiction in the early 2000s he stepped it up in time to rock out with Debbie Harry, in June of 2007 he was part of the True Colors ensemble headlined by Cyndi Lauper and hosted by the fabulous Margaret Cho. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation [GLAAD] awarded him the title of Outstanding Music Artist of 2008 for his album Release the Stars.
July 23rd: Don Imus virtually ruined his career talking smack about a few Rutgers basketball players. Although he apologized for his ‘nappy-headed ho’s’ comment left and right, he lost his job, sued, was sued, settled, sued, settled. Then he didn’t seem to learn his lesson when he and Warner Wolf started bashing footballer Adam Jones:
WARNER WOLF: He’s been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.
DON IMUS: What color is he?
WARNER WOLF: He’s African-American.
DON IMUS: Well there you go, now we know.
Imus’s inability to not only let go of his racist thoughts but to refrain from saying them in general proves the theory, “You can’t fix stupid.”
July 24th: Jennifer Lopez or J. Lo is more often seen as the mommy from the block lately. Her five month old twins Emme and Max to babydaddy Marc Anthony are her main projects right now. Lopez is the highest paid Latina/o actress in Hollywood history. She has sold over 48 million albums and was in Forbes’ Top 20 Richest Women in Entertainment.
July 25th: Matt LeBlanc born, 1967 is best known for his role as Joey Tribbiani, the silly, womanizing and good-natured, wannabe actor on Friends. Before he was askin’ women, “How you doin’?” he was the king of commercials; appearing in Heinz Ketchup, Levi’s, Doritos and Coca Cola.
July 26th: Rock n Roll front man and lead vocalist of the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger was born on July 26th. This English rocker has seven kids with four women. He might be done having children that he knows of, but this Brit has no intention of painting it black anytime soon. After collecting 437 million from their A Bigger Bang tour in 2007, he still has no plans for retirement and guesses that The Rolling Stones will be gathering no moss.
July 27th: Activist and philanthropist Norman Lear was born on July 27, 1922. He is best recognized as the producer of All in the Family, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, Good Times and Maude. His groundbreaking work set the stone for a new era of diversity in mainstream television. In All in the Family, Lear tackled issues of racism, homophobia, sexuality, women’s liberation, rape and impotence. He opened up the dinner table for all those hush-hush taboo topics by subtly implementing them into the everyday situations of the average WASP-y family. Thanks to Norman Lear, those are no longer the days.
