L.A. Street Fashion Series: Beverly M.

July 22nd, 2008 Written by: Tiffany Nocon· No Comments

Sushi fiend, future cosmologist, habitual line-stepper, and trendsetter Beverly M. takes a minute to tell us why L.A. Street Fashion is the shit.

What is L.A. street fashion to you?
Comfortably expressing individualism without having people giving a shit about your image since there is diversity all around you.

How has this city molded your style?

I have always been into the fashion world considering my major was fashion marketing or design. As far as fitting into the mold, I pretty much just get up on a daily basis and put on a kit to what I feel that day, whether it be plain Jane or just wild.

What L.A. trend needs to die?
Ed Hardy, definitely. Seems to be the #1 pick (which i do also agree with) and may I add those plain tees that have accessories graphed onto the shirt? Those need to go. For example, tees with scarves printed on them. It’s like, if you’re going to cop a shirt like that, you might as well just rock it right and wear the actual accessory. But I mean, if you find it a bargain to kill two birds with one stone to wear it at the same time, then by all means necessary, do it.

You’re going on trip to an unknown destination, and you’re only allowed to bring one suitcase of clothing. What do you bring?
A lot of underwear, personal hygiene products, hair product, make-up and last but not least accessories. I mean who knows where it can be? You can go shop for more clothes there. At least you got your basics with you to work with.

As a cosmetologist, how do you see hair, skin, and all of that goodness relate to the clothing people wear?

I believe that hair and makeup has a huge contribution to what you are wearing. It brings forth your own sense of style without having your outfit make you. You wouldn’t want to rock some fresh fit with your hair and such looking like a hot mess. It’s like a whole package.

What is the best possible scenario: a bangin’ hairstyle with wack threads or bad hair and a closet full of L.A.M.B.? Why?

Since I am a hairstylist, I’d rather have a bangin’ hairstyle with wack threads. Like I said before; own your clothes, don’t let them make you!

Who, where, and what do you get your fashion inspiration from?
My mommy. Lookin’ through pictures of my mom back in her day, she was looking way fresh during her era. Lacoste rockin’, platforms with bell bottoms, with the whole retro feel!

If someone had to describe your style, what would they say?

Unexplainable. Haha! I honestly don’t know!

Give me your top two shopping spots in L.A.:
American Apparel and Barracuda!

Thank you, Beverly! (She’s the cutie in the middle of this photo)
