- Still not bringing your own bags to the supermarket these days? Come July 1, 2010, you will be out of luck. AFP reports that Los Angeles will ban all plastic bags from retail stores effective July 1, 2010. This includes supermarkets and grocery stores as well, the Los Angeles City Council decided in its new regulation. - Although Los Angeles has a general reputation on being healthy, you have to admit, that it has its fair share of fast food establishments. Jan Perry, a Los Angeles City council member is looking to change this. The Wall Street Journal reports that Perry is spearheading legislation that would ban new fast-food restaurants from opening in a 32-square-mile area of the city. The area is already home to 400 fast-food restaurants, which have possibly contributed to high obesity rates there (30% of adults, compared with about 21% in the rest of L.A.)
- Rejoice! Homicide rates have finally dropped, after rising nearly 40 percent in 2008, reports the Daily News. The LAPD said there were 204 killings in 2008 as of Monday evening, which represented a 2 percent overall decline from same the time last year.

- The Westin Bonaventure Hotel, the largest hotel in L.A. has got a bone to pick with Phil Spector. They’re suing him for failing to pay more than $104,000 in accommodation fees. The hotel claims Spector and his wife and agent, Jennifer Lee Barringer, signed a contract to book rooms at the hotel for the length of Spector’s 5 month trial, in the murder of actress Lana Clarkson at his home in 2003, however when they asked him to pay the balance, Spector said he only would if he received a drastic discount on the balance.

I’m all for the plastic bags ban. I can’t help but feel a little green with eco-goodness when I bring canvas bags to the grocery store, but this’ll be an intersting change for all retail. The only thing that might change with me is - well, without the influx of plastic bags I’ll have to actually buy some plastic bags (or something of another material) to empty the contents of my cats’ litter box in. . . But otherwise? It’s about time!
