Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the salsa…
You’ll recall that the nation has been in the grips of a salmonella pandemic (so far 1,251 cases have been reported). The FDA, which is doing a bang-up job, originally blamed the outbreak on contaminated tomatoes, but then the focus was shifted onto jalapenos, onions and fresh cilantro. Basically, they’ve gone through the gamut of salsa ingredients before settling on jalapenos.
And while there hasn’t been a reported case of salmonella linked to this particular outbreak since July 4th, the FDA has officially advised grocery chains and consumers to avoid fresh, raw jalapenos.
The outbreak originally began back in April, meaning that it took the FDA about 3.5 months to determine that it’s probably the jalapenos. God help us if there’s ever a botulism outbreak, or something equally dangerous.
Chains such as Albertsons and Ralphs have pulled the little greenies from their shelves, as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, the FDA thinks it has found the source of the tainted chilis at a processor in Texas.
