Katy Perry pulled a triple whammy this week, topping three different charts on Billboard. “I Kissed a Girl” made # 1 on the Hot 100, Pop 100 and Hot Digital Song charts. Ahh, the bicurious scene kid’s theme song!
Just when the LGBT community was slowly getting some validation and respect, this gospel girl gone gay comes out crooning about how confused she is for expressing homosexual desires. Oh no, kissing a girl! She liked it…What would her pastor parents think? This creates a sort of Catch-22; should we be glad that it’s now acceptable to mainstream audiences to sing about homosexual tendencies even if it’s still in that silly overrated heterosexual paradigm? Perry’s lyrics both help and hurt the LGBT community at large. Here you have a hot new influential gorgeous female who is successful and of a religious background talking about kissing girls: PRO. You also have a hot new influential gorgeous female saying that she’s confused, she feels dirty, she feels good and bad: CON.
This fuels fire to the ‘bisexuality’ argument. The girl has a boyfriend and she’s intoxicated and hoping she won’t be in trouble for cheating with a girl. This portrays Bisexuals as flaky and promiscuous, “Just wanna try you on / I’m curious for you…No, I don’t even know your name/ It doesn’t matter.” It adds to the argument that the LGBT community is incapable of monogamy and beyond the concept of fidelity. Other lyrics in the song perpetuate the unhealthy image of women as sirens or ‘asking for it.’ ” Hard to resist so touchable / Too good to deny it;” this makes every girl at a Kappa Kappa Gamma party look like the next victim of sexual assault. Songs like this encourage unrealistic expectations from men and taints the freshly painted and realistic image of women and the LGBT community.
This song, although sung by a female seems to feed the stereotypical heterosexual male perspective. Sings Perry, “I kissed a girl just to try it / I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it.” I’m sorry, but where in Los Angeles is there a straight guy sitting around telling his girlfriend, ‘ Baby, if you get drunk and kiss a hot girl tonight, I’m going to be really upset’ ? Even in adult entertainment, typical lesbian pornography consists of images that feed the straight man’s libido. The basic XXX Girl-On-Girl setting involves two or more busty, long wavy-haired Beach Babes, generally with waxed genitalia and acrylic nails. They are either having a water fight, a slumber party or in a Catholic schoolgirl uniform applying make up or sucking a lollipop and the suspense drags on until we discover which girl [if not both] forgot to wear panties! These scenes endorse the concept that it is only acceptable to ‘be Gay’ if it’s for the amusement or entertainment of straight people.
The Bisexual population is portrayed as this young college crowd who are just getting it out of their system until they graduate with their MRS. degree. “You’re my experimental game / Just human nature / It’s not what, good girls do / Not how they should behave.” It is all a game and not only is it fun but it’s a choice. Bisexuals are constantly shot down and told that they are just confused, slutty, messed up about men or, my personal favorite, they have a bad relationship with their father. “My head gets so confused / Hard to obey….It felt so wrong / It felt so right / Don’t mean I’m in love tonight.” The only thing Perry probably feels right about is choosing to sing a song that’s been on the top of the charts for ten weeks now. Thanks, Perry, thanks.
