  • Staph infection kills high school student -Noah Armendariz, 17, a high school wrestler died Sunday at Children’s Hospital of Orange County, from complications of a drug-resistant staph infection and a teammate was being treated for the illness. Armendariz suffered from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, which is resistant but can be treated and often is not deadly. “The medication was doing its job but the infection was too aggressive,” said his grandfather, Frank Magana. Armendariz, of Downey, developed a rash and flu-like symptoms, then became progressively sicker, until he contracted pneumonia and had holes in his lungs. His teammate tested positive for staph a week after Armendariz became ill but his condition is not serious.
  • Deputy fatally shots alleged drug dealer - An LA County deputy shot and killed an alleged drug dealer in the unincorporated Lennox area when he thought the man was about to produce a weapon. The shooting in the 11000 block of Dalerose Avenue near West 111th Street took place around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday. Christian Portillo, 35, died at the scene. No deputies were hurt. No weapon was found on the victim.

  • Couple arrested for the death of their 2-year old daughter earlier this year - Lupe Lopez, 28, and Gabriel Garcia, 27, were arrested Wednesday, and charged today with murder for the death of their two-year-old daughter Isabelle Garcia, who died earlier this year of malnutrition. A sibling found the toddler unresponsive in her bed at their home in a trailer park two months ago. The primary cause of death was malnutrition. Isabelle weighed just 19 pounds at the time of her death. Lopez was initially arrested two days after her daughter’s death, but was later released. The couple’s five children were removed from the home and placed in foster care in March 2006, days after Isabelle’s birth, because of suspected neglect and concerns about her father’s alleged drug abuse.
  • Big rig accident caused 20 mile back up - A big rig crash ignited a brush fire this morning and shut down all but one lane of southbound Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton. A second lane had reopened by 2 p.m., but southbound traffic was backed up for about 20 miles, north into Orange County. The semi-truck overturned at about 5 a.m. about a mile south of the Las Pulgas Road exit after hitting an SUV that had been disabled in an earlier crash with another car. The SUV driver escaped before the big rig struck his car and was not injured. The big rig’s driver suffered major chest injuries but was conscious at the scene before being taken to the hospita.
