Project Runway: Getting Sea-Sick With It

July 24th, 2008 Written by: Kendra· 1 Comment

So far, Season 5 of Bravo’s Project Runway is making me tingle in a good way. It’s giving me that TV buzz I haven’t had since Clay and Rueben battled it out on American Idol, since Eva the Diva was on America’s Next Top Model, or since they almost didn’t let Donna Martin graduate on 90210. I’m getting excited folks!

Episode 2 begins with the designers choosing their models. How to pick between a bunch of hot tall chicks in matching black slips? I don’t know but they do it and someone named Belle goes home. Ciao Bella! The designers then find out that the models they picked are also their clients. The challenge? To design a cocktail dress for their models using “green fabrics” (which are natural textiles that don’t hurt the environment). The big twist? The models get to do the shopping for the fabric, much to the horror of the contestants. So, models are running around Mood shopping, the designers are hating and I’m laughing because, let’s face it, drama is funny.

No one likes the fabric picked by their models and everyone is stressing. Blayne, however, is just spewing the crazy. He calls Heidi “Darth Vader” because she is “Darthalicious”, of course. He eloquently explains his statement, “Because on the outside she’s shiny and all put-together but on the inside she’s crazy.” I’ve changed my mind about him. He can stay. Our girl Stella is having a small hissy because her model wants a flowey, drapey garment and Stella don’t swing that way. Stella does slick. She gets so hot and bothered that she begins lamenting the fact that she’s working with green fabric instead of something more familiar like, um, leather. “I just want to sew leather. Burn it up. Dye it up. Grommitt it, pyramid it, stuff it, spike it. I wanna make my leather,” she whines. Blayne holds court in the next room making fun of her. They hug it out and then he calls her “leather face”. Awesome. Funny she dreams of working with animal carcass instead of organic fabric. Hey, to each their own, right?

Tim Gunn arrives and asks, “How is everyone?” Suede replies, “Dandylions,” which, for some reason, makes me laugh really hard (He can stay too.) and Blayne mutters, “Let’s get sea sick with it.” Yes! Tim informs the designers that there will be no immunity with the challenge but that the winner’s dress will be sold on Bluefly.com.

At the fashion show, Natalie Portman is introduced as the guest judge and the designers all look like they will either faint or cry. Why do you think this is? Yes, she’s gorgeous but these peeps don’t strike me as Star Wars geeks.  So, what’s the big deal?  Are they watching Where The Heart Is or Closer over and over? Or, maybe Garden State? Hmm. On my Love List, I put Jennifer, Daniel, Suede, Kenley, Kelli, Blayne and Emily. On my Hate List go Keith, Terri, Wesley, Jerrell, Leanne, Stella (sorry Leatherface), and Korto. I completely left off Joe so I guess I found his design forgettable?

The judges gave the lowest marks to Korto, Leanne and Wesley. Korto’s design was deemed poorly executed. Kors said, “Trust me, even curvy girls, they don’t want fins off their butt.” Leanne’s dress was called a ’school project’. Natalie Portman said the model looked like “Peter Pan”. Ouch. Wesley’s dress was just unflattering. Nina Garcia hit the nail on the head when she said, “Shiny, tight and short is the quickest way to look cheap.” Wesley was sent home.

Now for the best. Kenley’s organic silk dress was called “chic” by Michael Kors. Stella’s asymmetrical dress was given high marks for it’s fit and for remaining true to her rocker aesthetic. But, Suede’s Red and Cream dress won the challenge. I have to admit I was rooting for this one. I’m a sucker for tulle and I loved how different it was from all the other dresses. Suede’s design will be sold on Bluefly.com. Yay! In Suede’s own words, “Suede f*@king rocked it.” Yeah.
