Dodger Beat: So Close to the Top

July 25th, 2008 Written by: Anthony· No Comments

The Dodgers started out the All-Star break with a win that propelled them into a NL West tie with the Diamondbacks, but since that win the Dodgers have been a mediocre .500 team. They are now, again, one game back of the Diamondbacks after losing two of three against the Rockies.

The Dodgers offensive spurts continue as the scoring machine team showed up for the first game winning 16-10 at Coors Field. They scored eight runs alone in the first inning and kept it going throughout the game, led by James Loney’s five RBI night. The next two games were a completely different team scoring four runs combined in a 1-10 and 3-5 losses.

They have a great chance this weekend and next week to get into first place, as they start a 10 game home stand. The home stand starts with a three game series against the lowly Washington Nationals, then two series against NL West opponents, the Giants and the Diamondbacks. The last series being the most important since the Diamondbacks are the team that stands between the Dodgers and first place.

The Dodgers have been in a tie or one game back of first place for about three weeks now, but they just cannot seem to get over the hump and into sole possession of first place in the NL West. It’s as if the Dodgers are afraid of being in first place. They went into the all star break one game back and one game after the break they were tied for the top spot once again. A tie seems to be what they are content with because they haven’t spent a day in first place, by themselves, since early in the season. With the second half of the season started already, they better have the drive to finally get over that first place hump.
