July 28th - Jackie Kennedy also known as the fashion icon Jackie O defined class and beauty to America the way Princess Diana did to England. As Jackie Kennedy she had two children, daughter sweet Caroline and son John. As Jackie Onassis she defined a modern woman as someone able to take care of herself and not be a chaste and grieving widow. Her candor and public life is remembered by many as an ideal role model, political activist and philanthropist [and we can't forget her fashion style, which is still paid homage to in Hollywood abound].
July 29th - Peter Jennings is best known as the beloved news anchor for ABC. He passed away in 2005 leaving behind an amazing career. Hired by ABC at age 26, he was and still is the youngest hired news anchor to date. I remember first really noticing him on 9/11 when he broadcasted live for 17 hours straight. His face seemed somehow reassuring during a time of unfamiliar tragedy.
July 30th - At age 61, Governator Arnold Schwarzennegor is no girly-man. Don’t forget it. His cheesy speeches and corny punchlines stolen from his own movies duped the California population into electing him as the 38th Governor of the Golden state. For our sake, he won’t be back. I hope…
July 31st - J. K. Rowling started out on welfare and within five years moved up to big-time millionaire status. As the mother of Harry Potter, Rowling can now sit pretty as all seven of her books have been completed. Potter-mania, to my disappointment has not ended yet. I predict that Harry Potter will be to my children’s generation what Star Trek was to my parent’s generation.
Born August 1st, 1942, Jerry Garcia would later hit the rock scene as the lead singer, lyricist, guitar player of the Grateful Dead; giving tripping, psychedelic hippies a god on earth. He performed with the Dead for 30 years, touring all over the world with groupies following closely behind. The Grateful Dead defined a whole new genre of music. He kept on truckin’ while battling heroin and other substance abuse until he left us in 1995 due to a heart attack. There are deadheads out there singing dirges still. Jerry Garcia’s music, sound and influence to Classic Rock will not fade away.
August 2nd, Mary-Louise Parker puts the herb in suburb. She’s the mom every stoner who watches Showtime wants to fuck err, do. The Weeds star will be 44, with two kids [a son with former paramour Billy Crudup and an adopted daughter from Africa] she is the epitome of what a MILF should be; Stacy’s Mom is no comparison. Watch Weeds! If you don’t have Showtime, you can still share in my Parker obsession by Netflix-ing Fried Green Tomatoes or Saved. No, Showtime did not pay me to write this spiel. Weeds airs Monday nights on Showtime at 10 and reruns during the week.
August 3rd - I’m sorry, it’s still funny. Martha Stewart still amuses me as a white collar criminal embezzler. It just goes to show you that even the middle and upper-middle class stay-at-home soccer mom can still have a wild side. But that was four years ago, now in 2008, the soon-to-be 67 year old businesswoman and homemaker advocate is doing what she does best, making homemaking her business. Her 15 year anniversary with longtime companion Charles Simonyi was in April. She also serves as a PETA patron, her official blog announced that her dog, Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow Chow passed away in in April at the age of 12.
