Tonight on TV: Shark Week, Weeds, Mystic River

July 28th, 2008 Written by: Andrew· No Comments

With the dog days of summer really sinking in as the heat combines with a lack of TV to completely fry our brains, picks for the best stuff on the tube is becoming increasingly important.

In order to meet this need, our weekly TV guide will expand to a daily list of the best bets in several different categories.

Let the picks begin. . .

Reality Rundown

We’ll spare you ABC’s 3-hour reality block featuring “High School Musical: Get in the Picture”, “Wanna Bet?” and “The Mole”, and turn you over to a gem on TLC, “John and Kate Plus 8″. This show details the attempted ordinary life of a central Pennsylvania couple with a set of twins, and a set of sextuplets. Catch four consecutive episodes tonight, starting at 9:00 with the brand new “Sunny Day” where the clan visits the Sesame Place amusement park.

News & Docs

Remember when unscripted TV used to be call news programming? Those were the days. Fans of that have a nice selection this evening.

It’s Shark Week on the Discovery Channel which means fin-to-fin coverage of the great fish. The news stuff starts tonight at 9:00 with the hour-long “Surviving Sharks” followed by “Day of the Shark” at 10:00.

Dateline NBC (remember when that used to be on like every night?) is new tonight with the stories of ten thrilling rescues caught on tape. A nice respite from pedophiles squirming in front of Chris Hanson.

Finally, HBO has a new documentary on tonight called “The Recruiter”. It details the work of a man who says he has the toughest job in America: Trying to recruit new soldiers at a time when there’s a war on.

Scripted Bliss

It is possible to find scripted series in the summer, even after the writer’s strike.

The best choice is “Weeds” on Showtime tonight at 10:00. This show seems to have jumped the shark with a complete relocation of the series and the ousting of half the cast, and the first few episodes showed a drop in quality, but the last few episodes have been pretty good. Tune in tonight and watch Andy and Doug attempt to set up shop as Coyotes.

On ABC Family at 10:00, catch “The Middleman” while you still can. This B-movie comic-book series is one of the most delightfully witty shows on television, at least during the summer. Tonight watch the titular hero and his sidekick Wendy (played by my current crush Natalie Morales, please e-mail if you’re reading) save the world from a cursed tuba from the Titanic. Camp romps never sounded so good.

Free Movie of the Night

For this section, we’ll avoid the HBO’s and Showtime’s of the world and focus only on the offerings from basic cable.

Tonight, check out Clint Eastwood’s epic of corruption, murder, and friendship on AMC at 8:00. “Mystic River” features Oscar-winning performances from Sean Penn and Tim Robbins in a film that should have “The Return of the King” for the Best Picture Oscar in 2003. Better pop an extra large bag of popcorn: This runs for three hours on TV.

Remember to check in every day for your guide to the best TV of the evening.
