Detour Festival Lineup

For you Pitchfork reading indie-philes out there, the just announced lineup for the 2008 Detour Festival (October 4th, LA City Hall area) is a treasure-trove of bands still on the fringe of the mainstream (actually, pretty damn far from the mainstream). And for those of you who like their all day festivals with a couple of big names at the top of the lineup card, you might just want to save your money for a trip down to San Diego for Street Scene in late September.

The 3rd annual downtown Los Angeles festival has decided to go all indie on us this year, announcing an initial lineup that boasts bands that the average music listener might not recognize (or have ever even heard of in passing, like who the hell is Mugison-well, apparently the Icelandic Beck). Furthermore, with no one big on the top of the bill (no Beck, or Sigur Ros, or The Raconteurs), this festival might be a hard sell for the average music fan, especially with the struggling oh, sorry George “Recovering” economy.

Not that this year is a bust or anything, especially when a band like Gogol Bordello is in big font on the top of the bill with the promise of a “full set”. That’s actually pretty damn awesome, actually. People will probably come out for headliner The Mars Volta whose fan base is rabid but whose continues to get weirder and weirder with each passing record. Other notable names on the bill include Shiny Toy Guns, The Presets, Cut Copy and Matt Costa. They are joined by artists I’ve never heard of such as We Are Wolves, AC Means and Japanese Motors and many more. All kidding aside, if you are a fan of discovering new music this might be a great day for you. Tickets are $40.50 and go on sale this weekend.

Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Thrice Tour

Its Live Nation’s world and we just live in it. The concert behemoth pretty much sponsors every big tour that criss-crosses the nation and leases out many (most) of the amphitheaters that these tours stop in. Chances are that if you set foot in any amphitheater or theater where the capacity is over 2,000 your in Live Nation territory, baby.

Anyway, it came as no surprise that the company had some pretty big announcements at this weeks IAMM Conference in Anaheim. Hitting the road on Live Nation tours within the next year or so are such artists as AC/DC, Green Day, Usher, Depeche Mode, Miley Cyrus and Slipknot (the last two will hopefully find a way to tour together). Those are some pretty big names. No word on if Live Nation will soon start sponsoring your kids’ talent show.

While no dates were mentioned for any of these tours, Live Nation did announce one new tour with a full itinerary this week and it’s a fucking doosey: Rise Against will headline a two month theater tour in support of their upcoming release “Appeal to Reason”. Support will be handled by, get this, The Alkaline Trio, Thrice and The Gaslight Anthem. That might, quite possibly, be the best tour of the year (unless that Miley Cyrus, Slipknot tour comes together). The tour begins October 2nd in Cleveland and goes through November 23rd in Detroit. No L.A. dates (or West Coast dates for that matter) have been announced yet, but keep an eye open for the weeks of October 29th and November 5th, where there are some big touring holes that need to be filled (giggity-giggity).

Miley Is Number One

In more Miley Cyrus (non-Slipknot) related news, the sitcom star, recording artist and amateur model’s sophomore album “Breakout” has reached number one on the Billboard Top 200 music chart in its first week in stores with a total haul of 371,000 copies sold. Good numbers for a post-download era artist and even more impressively an increase in first week sales over her last album “Hannah Montana 2/ Meet Miley Cyrus”, which debuted last summer with 326,000 copies sold.

Coming in second place is country titans Sugarland who sold 314,000 copies of the deluxe edition of their “Love on the Inside” record. Expect this album to stick around for a while as country has one of the few fan bases that keep buying records (*cough*- 50% off all album sales come from Wal-Mart- *cough*).

Jack White and Alicia Keys Duet

And the winner of the “Who Will Get To Find A Rhyme For The Phrase ‘Quantum of Solace’” award goes to Jack White and Alicia Keys! That’s right, after months of rumors involving Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis, it has been announced the Jack White of White Stripes/ Raconteurs fame and Alicia Keys of Grammy Award Winning- Piano- Singing fame, will team up to record the theme to the 22nd James Bond film “Quantum of Solace”. The theme is titled “Another Way to Die” and will be the first duet in the Bond Soundtrack history. Mr. White wrote and produced the song as well as played drums on it. He probably catered the damn thing too. The soundtrack will be released on October 28th and the movie hits theaters on November 7th.
