Bella Pita, the small, blossoming family business that’s won the stomachs of the heart of Westwood, offers an affordable and satiating menu of freshly baked Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. With an informal order-at-the-counter set-up and a salad bar that makes mouths water with taste and sheer aesthetics, this newcomer to L.A.’s spread of international cuisine beckons Bruins, business-folk, and every diner with a taste for delicious hommos, authentic falafel, and Bella’s most unique creation the irresistible wowshi.

By definition and this is from a Bella Pita authority , the wowshi is a freshly baked, handmade dough pocket stuffed with a variety of meat or vegetarian delicacies and toasted to piping-hot perfection. Thus, the first step of every wowshi experience begins with an address of personal preference, namely the filling: black bean (an original favorite), chicken, turkey, lamb, beef, tuna, and cheese. Next, optional baked-in wowshi additions: kalamata olives, feta cheese (yes, we’re getting gourmet), and a three-cheese blend. The friendly Bella chefs, a regular collection that give the place a homey, small-town feel, prep the personalized pocket, arrange the fresh dough on an infallable conveyor belt, and present the finished product with a holler of “Bean Lamb Turkey!”

Next, one of Bella Pita’s most definitive features: the fresh, perfectly kempt salad bar. Brimming with finely diced cucumbers and succulent tomatoes, the mainly standing-room venue’s bar ranges daily from sauteed cauliflower and fresh arugala to pickled beets and seasoned red onions. Not to be missed, the collection of homemade sauces and dressings: “very, very spicy sauce” (it’s violently red); herb dressing; lemon dressing; tahini sauce this place covers all the taste-bud bases. Fully stuffed all in a range of $3.75-$5.50 and voila–the wowshi is ready.

Besides their leading creation, Bella Pita also offers traditional favorites such as falafel, pita and hommos, green salad, and French fries. Moreover, the little joint has started a personable catering business with great service and flexible management that’s perfect for local graduation and birthday parties.

Ultimately, Bella Pita, the newcomer on the West-L.A. food scene, is young, fresh, and hot literally. Oh wow.
