Project Runway: Holla Atcha Boy!

July 31st, 2008 Written by: Kendra· 1 Comment

Blayne: Alright, Tim, Holla atcha boy!

Tim Gunn: Holler at your boy? Is that the phrase? What’s it mean?

Blayne: It means, holla atcha dawg. Shout out!

Tim Gunn: Holler at your boy? I don’t get it.

Tim Gunn gracefully swoops out of the room, looking back over his shoulder to give his final words of encouragement to the frantic designers. “Make it work. Carry on. Holler at your boy.” Oh, Tim. Always giving the people what they want. This is Season 5 of Project Runway, folks. And Tim Gunn means business. He is, as Blayne says, “Timlicious.”  Indeed.

This week’s challenge is to design a look for a “night on the town” inspired by New York City at, um, night. The designers are told they will be going on a “night on the town” with Tim Gunn. Instead of the dance club Blayne and Suede were wishing for, the contestants are given rain ponchos and boots and told to get on a double decker tour bus for a tour of New York in the rain. Funsies. There are four stops. At the first, Columbus Circle, Suede, Daniel, Leanne and Jennifer are dropped off for an hour. They are given cameras and told to draw inspiration from their location. The second location is Time Square. Stella, Blayne, Kenley and Keith are dropped off. Korto, Kelli and Joe go to the New York Public Library as the third location. The fourth is Greenwich Village. Terri, Emily and Jerell are dumped here.

The next morning, the designers are told to pick one image to inspire their designs. They are given 30 minutes to sketch and then are taken to Mood, where they finally get to choose their own fabrics. Yay. Upon returning to the workroom and getting down to business, Stella immediately begins to annoy her fellow designers with her constant hammering. She speaks to the leather as she pounds. “What a gay little grommitt. I’m rock and roll and I’m gonna die being rock and roll. If you don’t like it, get the f*#k outta here.” Alrightly then. As the deadline approaches, the contestants get all stressy and weird. Keith begins to bug big time. I want him to chill out. And to take off that Brett Michaels bandana.

At the runway show, we discover that the guest judge is Sandra Bernhard. Bitchin. I was pretty underwhelmed by the designs this week. My Love List was more of a You’re Okay List and it included: Joe, Leanne, Jerell, Daniel, Kenley, Korto and Terri. If I’m being butt-honest, Kenley and Terri are the only ones that were exciting. My Hate List was comprised of: Keith, Blayne, Emily, Jennifer, Kelli, Suede and Stella. The judges agreed with me for the most part. The bottom three were Jennifer, Keith and Emily. The top three showed some serious girl power, with Kenley, Leanne and Terri kicking everyone’s asses.

As for the bad, the judges hated Keith’s interpretation of a faded newspaper. Kors said it looked like “toilet paper caught in a windstorm.” Nina Garcia said it “doesn’t look polished.” Jennifer’s dress made the judges yawn. Heidi called it “matronly” and Nina said it was “on the boring side.” But it was Emily’s dress that offended the judges the most. Sandra Bernhard called it “cha cha” which I guess is a bad thing because she was sent home. I think this decision was pretty lame. Yeah, the dress was on my hate list but Emily was really talented. Send the boring chic (Jennifer) or the crazy toilet paper dude (Keith) home first. I mean, come on.

On a more positive note, the judges loved what Terri, Kenley and Leanne did. Of Terri’s model in the pants/backless dress combo, Michael Kors said, “Who is she? I want to know her.” Leanne’s black skirt and blouse were dubbed “wearable and modern” by Nina Garcia. Kenley’s patterned dress with the tulle underpoof won the gold. Kors even said it has “real energy.” I’m glad Kenley won something because she’s my favorite but I really thought Terri would take this one.

Stay tuned for next week when Blayne says something crazy and Stella gets really mad.
