Concert On Sales: Pennywise, Detour Festival, Devotchka and more

August 1st, 2008 Written by: Brian· No Comments

For survivors of the great Chino Hills earthquake of 2008, life can be difficult. As they start to recover and take survey on their shattered lives, they face a world of unimaginable horror: four dollar gas, a weak housing market, inept leadership and a new season of “America’s Got Talent”. One of the few things that keeps these half-dead survivors from giving up all hope is that traveling bands of musicians continuing to scour the roads looking for crowds and venues to perform their music of longing and hope. All that these performers ask in return is a few platters of nourishing food, a couple of bottles of refreshments, an open mind and a 50% share of merchandise sales. Rejoice survivors: I bring you a list of where these traveling performers will stop and regail you with these tales of hope. Read on folks read on and stay brave:

  • Pennywise’s rabid Orange County fanbase will come in handy on October 11th as the band headlines the first annual Lisk Festival at Oak Canyon Ranch. Joining the band at the pretty, yet rarely used venue are the reunited Gorilla Biscuits, the Aquabats, Bleeding Through, Ignite and Death By Stereo. I assume a few more big names will be added. Tickets go on sale 10am Saturday. FYI: No idea what “Lisk” refers too but once I know I’ll relay it to you.
  • As mentioned in my Music News piece on Wednesday, The Mars Volta and Gogol Bordello will headline the third annual Detour Music Festival Oct. 4th in Downtown L.A. Other performers include Cut Copy, The Black Lips, Matt Costa and many more. Tickets are on sale today for $40.
  • Devotchka will make their first LA Area appearance since Coachella with a show at the El Rey Theater on September 16th. Tickets are on sale Saturday at 10am and are $20.
  • Tricky will play LA for the first time since god-knows-when at the Fonda on September 12th. You can get tickets Saturday at 10am for $25 and ask him where the hell he has been.
  • What’s better than an Alligator Rocketship? How about Cobra Starship! The rockers come to town, with a plane full of snakes I’m sure, for two shows: November 1st at the House of Blues- Anaheim and October 30th at the House of Blues- Sunset Strip. Forever the Sickest Kids open both shows and tickets go on sale for each Saturday at 10am.
  • Following their stint opening for the mighty Nine Inch Nails this summer, Deerhoof will play the Avalon in Hollywood on October 3rd with Okay and The Happy Hollows. Tickets are $15 and are on sale now.
  • The Fratellis play the Wiltern on September 16th in support of their sophomore release “Her We Stand”. Tickets are $25 and go on sale today.
  • Umm, as I begin to really reach, Wayne Brady will play an R&B set on October 22nd at the House of Blues- Anaheim. Unwritten Law will play the same venue on September 12th. Both tickets are on sale Saturday at 10am.

Alright, enough reaching, it’s nap time. Enjoy your weekend.
