If you’ve heard The Republic Tigers you’ve probably heard the song “Buildings and Mountains.” And you probably heard them on Grey’s Anatomy, which acted as their claim to mainstream fame. But their claim to fame SHOULD be the fact that they’re rad. And you SHOULD have heard of them because of their rockin live show. One I was lucky enough to witness at the ever fabulous Spaceland this last Friday. The glittering drapes and sparkling lights of Spaceland were the perfect backdrop to this band, who stepped onto the stage with an immediate and obvious force of energy. The crowd was adequately pumped (I give partial credit to the opening bands who put on quite a fantastic show themselves) and left no floor space untouched by the wonder of their excited and dance happy feet.
“Experimental Indie Pop” accurately acts to sum up their style; hailing from Kansas City, MO this fabulous fivesome has a very interesting sound. One that could have gone awfully awry, but strangely works for them and puts them in their own unique class. Its like this; you know one of those bands where you don’t know if you wanna be crazy dancing, leg stomping, head tossing or what? That’s The Republic Tigers. One thing I immediately noticed about their songs is the abrupt, almost alarming transitions within their tracks. Usually when bands do this it bugs the crap out of me, but they’ve managed to time it so successfully that instead of a “WHOA, that was awkward,” you’re like “WHOA, that was SWEET!” Yea, that was the best way I could describe the phenomena, but I think it gets to the point.
One impressive feat, particularly for an indie pop band, is their extraordinary singing abilities and the focus it takes in their music. The harmonies are untouchable, and the singer’s unique voice along with his enunciation’s and rhythm changes keep you interested. These attention getting traits kept the packed audience mesmerized and excited. The Republic Tigers are the whole package, and I think anyone in that audience would agree. Their live show mirrored the excellence of their album, and went above and beyond my expectations. Kudos!
