Literary Round-Up: Like a Broken-In Pair of Shoes

August 1st, 2008 Written by: Lindsey Darden· No Comments

This week in the literary world revolves around things familiar and simple, and retaining such pleasures by way of ideas and insightful words. The aim of this week is to not venture too far from your element, with the exception of perhaps learning how to read your partner better, or reliving pleasant memories of your childhood via the then-best parts of a book: the pictures.

  • Book Signing and Discussion | Saturday, August 2, 2008 | 3:00 pm | The Mystery Bookstore - Map | Author James Scott Bell signs and discusses his new book Try Darkness, a story about a high-profile lawyer who finds himself helping the mis- and under-represented with their cases after being wrongly accused himself of murdering his fiancee. The plot thickens from there, but as an additional bonus, Mr. Bell will take the mystery out of arranging the skeleton of a novel, so this would be a good time to take any and all rough drafts out of storage. Fore more info, call (310) 209-0415.
  • Book Signing and Discussion | Sunday, August 3, 2008 | 3:00 pm | Bodhi Tree Bookstore - Map | Regardless of how things are doing in the love and relationship department, I’ve found that it doesn’t hurt taking a couple of notes outside the redundant, without-spark self-help scene. Peggy Rowe Ward and Larry Ward, Buddhist Dharma teachers and long-time couple (huge plus), will sign copies of their book Love Garden: A Guide to Mindful Relationships, highlighting a few ways to understand one’s partner via the basis of Buddhist principles. For more info, call (310) 659-1733.
  • Art Exhibit | through September 14, 2008 | Central Library, Getty Gallery - Map | The Los Angeles Central Library hosts the exhibit “Children Should Be Seen: The Image of the Child in American Picture-Book Art”, featuring original artwork for the book Stompin’ at the Savoy by illustrators Richard Yarde and the late Bebe Moore Campbell, and other works by Etienne Delessert, Marla Frazee, Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), Maurice Sendak, William Steig and Chris Van Allsburg, just to name a few. For more information, call (213) 228-7500.
