Circle In The Square
The Brand Library Art Galleries
1601 West Mountain St, Glendale
August 2 - September 5, 2008
Opening Reception August 2, 5 - 8pm
This show brought to you by circles and squares. Actually, the theme of this group exhibit at the Brand Library Art Galleries in Glendale is Circle In The Square. Believe it or not, not more than one artist has works that speak to this spatial subject matter; the group show includes works by Yesung Kim, Barbara Kolo, Susan Sironi, Luke Van Hook, and Cheryl Walker, with a special dance performance by Liz Curtis and Martha Carrascosa.
Dealing mostly with shapes, many of the works obviously explore space, color, and perception. It is no surprise that many of the works in this show are fairly simple in composition, but what is surprising are the different purposes which this circle in square theme is able to work toward.
Yesung Kim’s circles suggest movement and chronology as their placement changes from canvas (square) to canvas, eventually escaping their confines. Barbara Kolo’s circles are focused on organic shapes, free of signifiers and open to interpretation. Susan Suroni’s circles are deceptive, and change based on distance from the canvas, emphasizing the importance of vantage point and perspective. Luke Van Hook addresses the assumed and mythical perfection of the circle, and the counter-intuitive possibility of the unaided perfect circle, drawn from the human hand.
Moving away from the canvas is Cheryl Walker, whose site-specific installations of suspended shapes suggest space that is not there. Her works encourage interaction by the viewers, their reactions to the space becoming part of the work itself, and she even allows viewers to add or take away elements from some works. Curtis and Carrascosa’s performance piece will actually be with Walker’s installation, a collision of mediums and occasions that expands the intention and use of a specific artwork.
While all of the art will be on view until September 5, the performance piece and all of its space, time, and human restrictions is a one-time deal on the exhibit’s opening night.
