The weather has been pretty darn pleasant this week. Take advantage of this treat by getting outside and exercising while you can still breathe without keeling over - something I feel like doing when running in 95 degree, smog-filled heat. Since, at the moment, at least a good chunk of the LA area is NOT atrociously hot like this, celebrate  by getting outside and moving!
One thing I can claim some level of expertise for is running routes. Considering the fact I’ve only lived in LA for 3 (school) years, I’ve run quite a few different routes and decently far distances. So for those interested in exploring more of the city on foot, read (and run or walk) on. I have a beautiful place to go.
Mandeville Canyon Road is the place of which I speak. I realize canyon is a scary word. But, what goes up must come down! To be able to run up any street with the word canyon in it, one must repeat this in one’s head the whole way. Otherwise, running up, up, up and more up is just plain discouraging, on top of difficult. So, when beginning to run up Mandeville Canyon, be prepared to see hill, hill, and more hill. But rest assured a wonderful, peaceful downhill awaits you after.
Located in a relatively woodsy-ish, semi-rustic-y yet still unimaginably expensive part of Brentwood, this street is one of the closest you’ll get to a feeling of rural-ness here in LA. People ride horses (yeah, right, horses in LA? I know, strange, very strange. But I’ve seen evidence - hoof marks, that is.) Much of the sidewalk is more dirt that cement, and the street is lined by oaks and other trees. Real trees, not palm trees. It’s extremely quiet - some speedy cars zooming by, but, compared to the rest of LA, very low on traffic. And, thankfully, it’s pretty shady.
The route. Well, it’s simple. Start at the bottom of Mandeville Canyon. Run up. Keep running up. Run until you can’t run up anymore. Turn around. Run down. Turn around and look up what you ran. Be thankful you’re done.
Here’s a Map, so you can get yourself there - the first step! Also, right at the bottom of the street, across Sunset Blvd., is a school where you should be able to park.
Happy hill-ing!
