DANCE

  • Belly Dance and Brazilian Samba Dance Classes | Monday, August 4, 2008 | $16.00 | 7:00 pm | International Dance Academy Hollywood - Map | These twice-weekly classes will be held throughout the month of August - belly dancing at 7:00, and samba at 8:00 - under the instruction of Patricia Prata. I have seen her perform, rather effortlessly, in fact. Undoubtedly it will be fun and and a great stress reliever, but if solely for the purpose of doing it right, she is the one to learn from. For more info, call (323) 463-8865.

MUSIC

  • Warpaint | Monday, August 4, 2008 | 9:00 pm | Free | Spaceland - Map | Taking over Mondays in August at Spaceland is Warpaint. Take a sample of their music here, a cover-inspired ditty that’s just plain angelic and pseudo-folksy with traces of Karen Oh and Meg White, and - rather appropriately - with a little less edge. For more info, call (323) 661-4380.

COMEDY

  • Doug Benson Loves Interrupting Movies | Monday, August 4, 2008 | 9:30 pm | $5:00 | Upright Citizens Brigade Theater - Map | Do you find yourself wanting to rip wide open with commentary a movie you’ve spent $15.00 on, but you can’t thanks to those “Silence is Golden” enforcements? For only a fraction of the price, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, and Doug Benson himself will let you in on some quality voicing-time with various movie clips - this month’s theme being sports flicks. If you’re thinking along the lines Mystery Science Theater 3000, you have the right hunch. For more info, call (323) 908-8702.

ART

  • Yoko Ono Wish Trees | Through November 9, 2008 | Free | One Colorado - Map | Having made its way to Pasadena, Yoko Ono’s Wish Trees - twenty-one living crape myrtles - will remain in the courtyard of One Colorado until November, in which your deepest inner wishes will be tied to branches, then stored in capsules to be buried off the coast of Reykjavik, Iceland, at the Imagine Peace Tower on Videy Island. If anything other than a charmed idea in the power of hope as expressed by one’s heart, the artwork is dedicated to John Lennon, and for yours truly, that’s just enough. For more info, call (626) 564-1066.
