Los Angeles was surprised this Sunday by some determined Earthquakes. I’m not talking about a repeat of the natural disaster that struck the L.A. area a week ago. I’m talking about the game between the Los Angeles Galaxy and the San Jose Earthquakes where the final score was 3-2 in favor of the Bay Area club. The game belonged to Major League Soccer’s Week 19 and was played in McAfee Coliseum in Oakland, Calif.
The Galaxy needed points in order to ensure a more comfortable spot in the Western Conference. On the other hand, the Earthquakes have collapsed in the season and were looking to accumulate any points to help them get out of last place. Regardless, the SoCal/NoCal rivalry did not disappoint as the game was filled with excitement, offensive plays and beautiful goals.
Early on, San Jose went ahead when Arturo Alvarez scored the first goal of the game in the 8th minute. The Quakes were clearly playing better and in the 40th minute Darren Huckerby scored to enlarge the score and make Los Angeles tremble with their aftershocks.
When the Galaxy seemed doomed, a quick response right before halftime made the team come back from the dead. In the 42nd minute the Beckham/Donovan combination struck again. The British sensation sent a superb pass to the box and Landon Donovan headed the ball past ex-Galaxy keeper Joe Cannon.
In the second half, the Galaxy pressured intensely to find the tie and in the 76thminute, they found it. Thanks to a creative solo play and a great shot made by Edson Buddle, the game was tied at two. It seemed as if the game was to end in a draw and both teams would share the points.
But San Jose’s Ryan Cochrane had a different idea when he put the ball in the back of the net after a series of rebounds in the 90th minute. This dramatic goal made the difference in the game as the Quakes won a heart-breaker in the last minute.
Even with the victory, San Jose is still in last place but can gain some confidence and hope for the remainder of the season.
Meanwhile, the devastating loss for Los Angeles not only keeps the Galactic team in fourth place in the Western Conference with 23 points and a (6-8-5) record, but it also jeopardizes their chances to make the playoffs.
Next up for the Galaxy is none other than the SuperClasico against Chivas USA on Thursday at the Home Depot Center. Both teams are coming from difficult losses and will do the impossible to obtain the victory. The game will not only be about local pride, but it will be crucial for both teams if they want to remain in the playoff hunt.
