This Week on Born to be Hollywood: Obama, Charlize Theron, Hoffman

August 4th, 2008 Written by: Allison Kent· No Comments

August 4th: Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama will celebrate his birthday today [August 4th, 1961]. No longer just a Hawaii-born, Kansas-raised Illinois Senator, Obama is now representing a large caucus of both Bush-bashers [both Republican and Democratic] and the Millennium generation. All he can hope to do now is continue to reach people, their votes and their pockets. Remember, it’s not over til every last vote in Florida is counted.

August 5th: Terri Clark [August 5th, 1968] is a Canadian country singer-songwriter. In 1995, “Better Things to Do,” her first single made Billboards’ Hot Country Singles and Tracks List. In 1996 her second album, “Just the Same” went platinum in both the United States and Canada. Over the past 12 years Clark has continued to put out albums and release hit singles, her next single is expected this fall.

August 6th: Soleil Moon Frye [August 6th, 1976] is known for her kid-star role as Punky Brewster. She went on to play a dark tortured roommate on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. She also played a tortured roommate in The Girls’ Room in 2000. She is one of the youngest people to direct a movie, at age 22 she wrote and directed Wild Horses [1998]. Frye lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two daughters. And THAT’S the truth!

August 7th: Charlize Theron [August 7th, 1975] is a gorgeous Best Actress Academy Award winner and nominee [a win for Monster and a nomination for North County]. Theron grew up on South Africa, modeled, danced at the Joffrey Ballet in New York, moved to Los Angeles and began working as an actress within eight months. Nothing if not well-rounded, Theron is no snob [or prude], she also won Best Kiss at the 2004 MTV Movie Awards for her smoochy performance with Christina Ricci in Monster.

August 8th: Rain Man, Tootsie, The Graduate… no, Dustin Hoffman [August 8, 1937] doesn’t need to try to seduce us; he’s got us. Hoffman has been nominated seven times for Best Actor by the Academy Awards and won twice; in 1980 for Kramer vs. Kramer and in 1989 for Rain Man. The American Film Institute recognized him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. His acting career has set the standard for many following generations of actors to aspire to. He never fails to challenge himself or his audience.

August 9th: Eric Bana [August 9th, 1968], the actor from down under began his career as a stand-up comedian. He is best known for his roles in Hulk, Troy and as the hottest version of Henry VIII in The Other Boleyn Girl. According to Empire Magazine, Bana is the 61st sexiest movie star in Hollywood. A family man at heart, when he’s done filming he heads back home to live in Australia with his wife, Rebecca and their two children.

August 10th: Rosanna Arquette [August 10th, 1959] has been on the Hollywood scene for over 30 years. Her career is made up of small roles that are provoking and stimulating. She was in The Whole Nine Yards and Desperately Seeking Susan. Some of her most memorable television roles are reoccurring characters. She played Cherie Jaffe on The L Word, a spoiled wife with too much money, freedom and sex drive. Her performance as a woman who gets women on their knees was only five episodes long over a span of three years, but she has made Cheri into a woman who exists long after she’s no longer on the screen. For 24 episodes she was on Life of Brian as Nicole Varzi. If you’re a big enough fan of Pulp Fiction, you’ll recognize her as Jody, the drug dealer’s wife with all the body piercings.
