  • Gas Prices are FINALLY dropping - This week the gas prices feel again, showing some signs of relief to motorists. The U.S. average price for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline slid 7.5 cents to $3.88, and in California, the average fell 11.2 cents to $4.205. It was the seventh straight weekly decline for pump prices in the state, which peaked at $4.588 on June 1.
  • Unexplained hot spot in LA reaches 800 degrees - A patch of land in Ventura County’s section of Los Padres National Forest recently heated up to 812 degrees. Firefighters and geologists have been monitoring the area and developing theories for what caused firefighters to report to an area with rising smoke but no flames. Anyone else thinking about the movie volcano? Video here.
  • Prostate exams after the age of 85 may cause more harm than good - It is now being said that men over the age of 75 should no longer be screened for prostate cancer because both physically and psychologically the harm outweighs most of the potential benefit from treatment. “Most oncologists already argue against treating most men in that age group for prostate cancer because they are more likely to die from some other cause than from their tumor.”

  • Governator asks for temporary sales-tax hike - He takes away our fat, cuts government workers down to minimum wage and now, he wants to increase our sales tax. Yes it will effect the tourists and help our economy but it will also hurt us in the meantime. “Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed during private negotiations over the weekend to close the state’s $15.2-billion budget gap with a temporary but immediate one-cent hike in the state sales tax, according to legislative sources.”
  • Bakersfield fights the fat! - Women in Bakersfield have started to fight the fat in their communities thanks so newly reformed parks. The woman gather 5 days a week, to exercise, make friends, and spend more time outdoors.
  • New break through in HIV prevention - HIV has come a LONG way since the 80’s but still many doctors have been disheartened by the failures of vaccines and microbicides, and so some AIDS researchers are now touting a third possibility: using existing HIV drugs prophylactically. Stop cancer where it starts. “By next year, as many as 15,000 people worldwide will be enrolled in trials to test the concept — more than are enrolled in all vaccine and microbicide trials combined… There are seven trials underway or planned.”
