L.A. Street Fashion Series: Amber and Jason

August 5th, 2008 Written by: Tiffany Nocon· 1 Comment

Watch out Beyonce and Jay, Angelina and Brad; there’s a new fashionable couple on the scene! The cutest Chemical Engineer majors ever spotted at UCLA prove that physics can be hot, too! Amber and Jason give us a taste of what wearing lab coats everyday and being in a loving relationship can do to your wardrobe.

What is L.A. street fashion to you?
Amber: L.A. street fashion is like saying “my personal style, meet the city of Los Angeles.” L.A. street fashion is about bringing your own flavor and allowing yourself to broadcast that. People are open canvases, billboards, and another form of mass media in my opinion. Some people may look at you and say “What was she thinking?” or “Wow, how did she think of doing that?” but either way it’s about infusing your own personal touch into what’s hot and trendy.

Jason: I don’t know much about fashion and it’s really not my forte, but L.A. street fashion seems to be whatever people want it to be. You can be yourself, you can follow the trends, you can dress like you don’t care, or you can take hours putting yourself together.

How has this city molded your style?
Amber: Well, I think that this city has definitely made my style more eclectic, less mainstream, and turned up the class a bit. L.A. is so diverse, so I like my style to reflect that diversity rather than being one-dimensional.

Jason: L.A. is a mix of different cultures, and it’s hard to deny that it has an effect on people. The hip-hop culture, the laid back culture, and the college atmosphere molded my style. I used to never wear baseball hats, but now I’ve started collecting them and putting my love of baseball into my style.

What L.A. trend needs to die?
Amber: Excessive layering, people! I know that MK Olsen can rock it and look coked-up and hippie-like, but this look isn’t for everyone. Some people just have too much going on at once, so it comes across as an explosion of accessories. Be natural, and narrow your outfit down to like 5 items or less! Lose the heavy eyeliner, 50 pieces of jewelry, and tone it down! Hahaha.

Jason: Guys wearing Dolce and Gucci sunglasses is a little weird…

What’s something you want to see in the future of L.A. fashion?
Amber: I really like when I see someone wearing brands that I don’t recognize, or a style I have never seen before. I want to see more people digging through their imagination to piece their ensemble together, rather than digging through major brands and labels. L.A. is not a cookie-cutter city, and neither are it’s people.
Check out American Apparel or Rogue Status and build up your own personal brand.

Jason: I’d like to see less Ed Hardy, less snobbiness, and more genuine style. Some people look like they’re wearing their wallet and dubs as their clothing, and that doesn’t look good to me. Instead of trying to show off, I’d like to see more people focus on lookin’ good and approachable rather than better than everyone else.

Do you think that you two compliment each other’s style?
Amber: Haha. That is a good question because I always think about this. I’m not going to lie, I think we look bomb when we’re together. Of course there are going to be days when we clash because my style can get ultra-feminine while he always looks very GQ and dashing (you’re welcome, sweetheart).
I think that our styles compliment each other because we made them our own and tend to balance each other out.

Jason: If she looks good, I think it makes both of us look good. I like to look put together and sharp, and when we’re both looking like that I think it makes us stand out. I don’t think that we clash because we both have influence on what clothes are in each others closets, so it’s hard to look like we have completely different styles.

What is the key to a couple looking well dressed together (like you two) as opposed to looking cheesy and overly matching?

Amber: I never ask what he’s wearing before I see him!! It’s always a surprise. I get up, I get dressed, and I’m coming out in my own signature style. The only time we ever look matchy-matchy is when it’s game day and we bust out the Dodger shirts, or when we want to wear our Rogue Status tees together (but even those aren’t identical!) I think that we always look fresh because I let him do his thing, and I do mine. When we do get together, you’re getting two different styles when you’re looking at us and that’s what makes it hot.

Jason: Haha. It’d be pretty hard to match her!! I don’t really own, you know… dresses and pink stuff… All of our clothes are so different and unique but they compliment each other. We don’t have to wear matching shirts or the same colors to look like we belong together. It should be effortless; some people look like they’re just trying too damn hard.

In your experiences, how has shopping with a significant other improved your wardrobe? Do you think couples should shop together?
Amber: Yes, definitely!! I love getting his input on things that I’m picking out because his opinion definitely matters. I know what he likes to see on me, and I’ve given my two cents on his wardrobe choices too.
There are some things that he would never pick out, but he ends up getting because I suggested it and it looked fresh on him. The same goes for me, and I think our wardrobe has become more diverse because of it.
Girlfriends should MOST definitely drag their boyfriends shopping because one way or another, they’re gonna make you look even cuter! Who can argue with that, right?

Jason: Even though I don’t really care for shopping, I like hearing what she has to say about certain things. She has this ability to dress me up in her head and pick out stuff so fast that I never would have seen.
I also like suggesting short shorts and stuff like that for her. Hahaha!

Jason, tell us the wackest outfit Amber has ever worn and what made it so bad.
Jason: She does have kind of a unique style, and I think she has some of those days when it goes overboard. Amber’s always cute to me, but one day she was wearing these leggings, shorts, and funky shirt and it just looked crazy to me. Sorry, babe…

Give me your top three shopping spots in L.A.
Amber: Definitely American Apparel for your basics
Victoria’s Secret (and Jason probably agrees)
Urban Outfitters.

Jason: One of my favorites is Active, can’t go wrong with some LRG tees and a Nixon watch.
I also like Rogue Status just because it’s fresh from Venice Beach.
Of course, gotta go to Lids a lot to get hooked up with all my hats.
