  • 9-year-old killed by water born amoeba - Riverside County health officials are urging swimmers to use caution after a 9-year-old boy contracted the deadly Naegleria fowleri amoeba. He had gone swimming in Lake Elsinore several times this summer. The parasite lives in warm freshwater lakes, rivers and poorly maintained swimming pools, experts say. It enters the brain through the nose, where it can cause a severe and nearly always fatal infection. There were 33 reported cases of infection in the U.S. from 1998 to 2007. The amoeba can kill in three days, and symptoms include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting and a stiff neck.
  • Man gets life in prison for murdering wife and step son - A man who fled California for nearly a decade after killing his estranged wife and stepson has been sentenced to life in prison. Fu Lin Wang, 61, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. He could have faced the death penalty if the case had gone to trial. He has no chance for parole. Prosecutors say Wang shot his wife, Carole Lee, and her 18-year-old son Michael Chu in December of 1998 at her Alhambra home.

  • Man killed in police shooting - LAPD shot and killed a man this morning who was allegedly brandishing a shotgun in Encino. The incident took place in the 5800 block of Jamieson Avenue, just north of the 101 Freeway. Officer Marjan Mobasser said officers responded to a call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon and when they arrived, they saw a man walk out with a shotgun and raise it at them. The officers fired at the suspect, who was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. “We don’t know very much about the suspect,” Malachi said.
  • Man kills himself my stepping in front of tractor-trailer - A 31-year-old, Santa Ana man, was standing on the side of the freeway with his arms raised as he stepped in front of the truck. The driver said he had an “angry look” as he stepped onto the freeway and committed suicide. The man had parked a 1999 Buick Century on the shoulder with the hood raised and had been standing by the car before walking into traffic. Investigators determined that the man’s death was a suicide.
  • Man charged with vehicular manslaughter for killing a mother - A mother out for a stroll with her husband and child in Riverside when a sport utility vehicle swerved onto a sidewalk and struck her. A suspect has since been arrested and charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The Riverside County coroner identified the mother as Gloria Rodriguez, 18, of Riverside. She was walking on Tyler Street about 10 p.m. Monday. Javier Hernandez, 23, of Riverside had been speeding north on the street when he lost control of his SUV near Robinson Avenue. He knocked over a utility pole and damaged a nearby fence before striking Rodriguez. Hernandez fled the scene but was arrested after jumping a fence and falling about 25 feet onto concrete.
