Tonight on TV: Johnny Cash, Hell Date, Blazing Saddles

Every night until summer ends you need look no further for your daily guide through the summer TV jungle.

This is a rough time for nightly entertainment with the tube awash in repeats and lame reality shows, but there’s still good stuff available to get you through the work week.

Let the picks begin. . .

Reality Rundown

  • At 9:00 on ABC is the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the grand finale of “I Survived a Japanese Game Show”. The final four contestants compete to determine a winner by running an obstacle course filled with the hardest challenges from previous episodes. So if you haven’t watched the show yet, you can enjoy the entire series in one two-hour installment. Banzai!

  • At 10:30 BET premieres a brand new reality series to follow “Baldwin Hills”. It’s called “Hell Date” and features contestants who believe they’re on a date, when in reality it’s a hidden-camera series designed to put the unwitting party through the worst date of their life. I guess the producers saw “Blind Date” and thought a series comprised only of the dates from hell would be perfect.

News & Docs

  • PBS’ award-winning documentary series “P.O.V.” is all-new tonight with a very old documentary. At 10:00 catch a cobbled together 1969 documentary on the man in black, Johnny Cash. The 90-minute film features rare performance footage with Cash and Bob Dylan.
  • On the season premiere of Smash Lab, Chuch and Gadget and the rest of their crazy team attempt to devise an exterior airbag system for cars. The episode is called “Car Over a Cliff” so expect a lot of cool plunges into rocks.

Scripted Bliss

  • There’s only two new scripted shows tonight, and neither are good enough to recommend. Just be aware that “Eureka” is new on Sci-Fi tonight at 9:00 and you can catch a new installment of the Benjamin Bratt vehicle “The Cleaner” on A&E at 10:00.

Free Movie of the Night

  • Mel Brooks used to be funny. Then he made “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”, “Dracula: Dead and Loving It”, and “Life Stinks”. He capped that descent with his torpid “Young Frankenstein” musical. But trust me, he used to be funny. And there’s proof tonight on CMT at 10:00! Catch his hilarious western comedy “Blazing Saddles” and learn why it’s a bad idea to eat beans around a campfire.
