Tonight on TV: Nova, Root of All Evil, Dodgeball

Every night until summer ends you need look no further for your daily guide through the summer TV jungle.

This is a rough time for nightly entertainment with the tube awash in repeats and lame reality shows, but there’s still good stuff available to get you through the work week.

Let the picks begin. . .

Reality Rundown

  • It’s catharsis time for NBC as it attempts to make up for airing the horribly exploitative “Baby Borrowers” with an hour-long town hall meeting entitled “Lessons Learned” Let me guess, people will do anything to get on TV?
  • At 10:00, HBO takes us inside NFL training camp for the second straight season with its series “Hard Knocks”. Last year, we journeyed through the pretty mundane Kansas City Chiefs camp, this time around it’s the Dallas Cowboys featuring the rain king Pacman Jones, T.O., and Jessica Simpson’s boyfriend, Tony Romo. Seems more like a soap opera than a football team.

News & Docs

  • ABC’ Primetime shows us “China Inside and Out” tonight at 10:00. Bob Woodruff reports on everything about China’s burgeoning economy and how the country’s new policies will affect relationships with the United States. And you thought TV was just for stupid people.
  • If you want to get even smarter, check out PBS’ “Nova ScienceNOW” tonight at 9:00. They’ll detail such breakthroughs as a space elevator and scientists’ attempts to develop a pill that will extend the human lifespan. Nova is the best produced of these science documentary shows on television, and with topics like these, this installment is sure to be a winner.

Scripted Bliss

  • It would be a shame taking up all the room in this column describing one single series, so we’ll just give you the titles of the four brand new episodes of “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne”: “Party Over Here”, “The Last Supper”, “We’ve Come This Far By Faith Part 1″, “We’ve Come This Far By Faith Part 2″.
  • It purports not to be scripted, but it sure seems that way, so we’ll include the brand new episode of “Lewis Black’s The Root of All Evil” in this slot. Tonight Greg Giraldo and Andy Daly debate over steroid use and breast implants. Mr. Black will determine which is the greater evil.

Free Movie of the Night

  • “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” is perhaps the most underrated comedy of this century. Don’t believe me? Watch it at FX tonight at 8:00 and tell me you can think of five funnier comedies. Betcha can’t.

Remember to check in every day for your guide to the best TV of the evening.
