  • Doctor pleads not guilty to sexual assault - A physician whose father is the leader of the Bermudan government has pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing patients. Dr. Kevin Brown entered pleas to 23 felony counts at a hearing Thursday in Los Angeles. He remains in custody after being arrested last month and charged with molesting patients, including an undercover police officer and a 15-year-old. If convicted, Brown could face more than 25 years in prison
  • Security guard kills man after alleged gang fight - Carson officials shut down the annual Samoan Flag Day celebration, because a security guard shot and killed a gunman Wednesday night. However, about 40 Samoans continued their festivities at the park this afternoon, but sheriff’s officials said no more people would be allowed in. Faletogo’s 46-year-old wife, Pulou, was one of three bystanders shot and wounded. Two boys, 12 and 13, were also hurt. They were taken to a local hospital, Carrillo said, with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said the trouble started about 10 p.m. when two young women began fighting. What began as a verbal confrontation escalated into a fistfight that included a Tongan man and a Samoan man. The Tongan eventually pulled out a firearm and fired into the crowd. The guard returned fire, striking the man, who then collapsed just outside the park gate. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s name had not been release.

  • Firefighter burned during exercise - A Los Angeles city firefighter was burned on his face and arms this morning while using a power saw during a training exercise in South Los Angeles. The firefighter was using a rotary saw to cut through metal bars on a vacant single-family house under demolition when a loose fuel cap caused some fuel to spill and ignite. The incident, which occurred about 9 a.m. in the 400 block of East 52nd Street, left the firefighter with burns on 5% of his body but he did not show any signs of suffering from respiratory problems.
  • Hollywood nightclub bounce shot - A 35-year-old Hollywood nightclub bouncer was shot in the back early this morning by an unknown assailant. The bouncer walked into the lobby of the LAPD Hollywood Division station around 3:30 a.m., bleeding from his wound. Although the victim worked at a nearby club, police said the shooting took place on the street near the intersection of Wilcox and Lexington avenues and appeared not to be related to the club. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his wounds.
  • Kidnapper at large - A man who kidnapped a 23-year-old woman from a bus stop in Eagle Rock and sexually assaulted her was at large today. The woman was abducted about 5:30 a.m. July 26 at Colorado and Eagle Rock boulevards, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.The suspect forced the woman into his car and drove to a secluded area, where he sexually assaulted and robbed her, police said. The victim was able to give police enough information for them to create a composite sketch of a Hispanic man, 18-22 years old, about 5 feet 7 inches and 140 pounds with a mustache. He was driving a dark blue, four-door 2006-08 Honda Civic.
  • Driver killed in high speed pursuit - A motorist who was allegedly speeding Thursday on a Compton street crashed into another vehicle and was killed. The crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. at Compton Boulevard and Sloan Avenue. According to Schuerger, the motorist was speeding down Compton Boulevard and passed sheriff’s detectives, who radioed the information to a dispatcher.   • South LA apartment shooting kills 2 - Two men were hospitalized Thursday with non-life threatening wounds following a shooting in the courtyard of a South Los Angeles apartment complex. Both victims were taken to a hospital and were expected to survive. The shooting occurred at 9137 South Broadway around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a sergeant at the LAPD’s  Southeast Station. Words were exchanged between the assailant and the two victims moments before gunfire broke out, the sergeant said, adding that the shooting was not considered gang-related.
