It’s about damn time LA caught up to NY on this one. All around NY calories are posted in chain restaurants that let customers know that a Venti Mocha with Whole Milk actually has 508 calories and 27 grams of fat in it without whip cream and that even the ranch dipping sauce at Burger King has 170 calories and 17 grams of fat per ounce! Not to mention their Double Whopper with Cheese which has 1010 calories and 67 grams of fat.
In recent days, the state ordered restaurants to cook without artery-clogging trans fats. The Los Angeles City Council approved a ban on new fast-food restaurants in some parts of town. And on Thursday, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky announced a proposal that would — hold on to your deep-fried Snickers — put calorie counts on some of your menus.
“Most people do not have a clue how many calories they are taking in when they have a milkshake or a double hamburger with cheese and fries,” Yaroslavsky said. “This is an incentive for people to make the right dietary choices.”
The proposal would require chain restaurants in unincorporated parts of the county to include a caloric breakdown for all their offerings. The issue is expected to come before the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday; the supervisors will be asked to call for the drafting of an ordinance. If all goes smoothly, the measure could be in place by the end of the year, Yaroslavsky said.
I think this is a great thing. It will force fast food places to pull people in by nutrition, not just who has the most over-sugared, greasy food. Since now the biggest burger has always been the winner. Maybe now it will be the biggest and healthiest burger. Perhaps a boca or turkey burger option? Or perhaps no more double- cheese BBQ burgers.
Although is people need/want to splurge they so do so! As long as they know they’re eating a 2,000 calories meal and want to then they can enjoy it! But it’s the every day fast-food eaters. It’s those who rely on it at or on their way to work. Most of the healthy options being offered aren’t even that healthy. Some salads at Jack in the Box actually have as many as 1120 calories, worse than most of the burgers. From now on if they are trying to sell you health food, you’ll be able to see for yourself how healthy it actually is.
I’ve actually heard it argued that people think they should leave calories off the menu because it makes it so people can’t enjoy their food. This is pathetic. If you want to splurge, splurge. But don’t let the mega-corporations hide behind fake veils of being healthy. I think you can enjoy your food just as much is not more if you don’t what you’re putting into your body. And the fact is that people in this country have done a bit too much enjoying and not enough counting.
