August is finally here which means the baseball playoff race is heating up, football is on its way back and, most importantly, the new TV season is almost here.
That doesn’t mean, however, that we’ve escaped the hell onscreen that is the endless reality programming and reruns of the summer. We must soldier on for a few more work weeks until all our favorite shows come back in September to make the drudgery more bearable.
But don’t despair, below are enough good shows for tonight to get you through at least this evening.
Reality Rundown
- Ace of Cakes returns to the Food Network with it season premiere tonight at 10:00. The fifth season kicks off with the bakery producing a theme cake for the premiere of “Kung Fu Panda”. No word on whether Jack Black ate the entire thing by himself.
- Those fed up with reality will enjoy the brand new Michael Ian Black-hosted Comedy Central series “Reality Bites Back”. This new show features comics on mock versions of reality shows competing for a cash prize. Catch the premiere tonight at 10:30 with “Not-So American Gladiators”. Supposedly there’s some illegal immigration in the mix on this ep.
News & Docs
- BET gets into the world of celebrity and entertainment news with their the debut of their new series “Black Carpet” tonight at 8:00. Toure and Daniella (last names are apparently superfluous) will guide viewers through entertainment events and detail the high-profile urban lifestyle. Their correspondents tour the country to deliver the latest on what’s hot in black culture.
- Check out a brand new episode of “The Works” tonight at 10:00 on Discovery. This series features a nerdy host going all over the country to bring us deeper stories behind everyday things. Tonight, the subject is sneakers. The episode features a man who thinks these shoes are the pinnacle of human evolution. Weird.
Scripted Bliss
- USA’s coolly mediocre “Burn Notice” is in full swing with its second season. Tonight at ten check out Michael attempting to take down a jewelry heist from the inside when his latest client refuses to back out of the crime ring attempting the robbery.
- On Cartoon Network, tune in to a new episode of the Canadian import “Total Drama Island”. This is a parody of reality shows done in that inimitable Adult Swim style that has nevertheless spawned about 10,000 imitators. Tonight the stranded toon teens’ challenge is to prepare a 3 course meal. Too bad nobody gets to eat it.
Free Movie of the Night
- Most people think Martin Scorsese only directs testosterone-driven gangster epics with tons of blood and even more F-Bombs. Not true. Tonight at 8:00 on We, you can discover the breadth of his range with the 1993 film “The Age of Innocence” featuring Daniel Day-Lewis and a pre-klepto Winona Ryder. The film is an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s 1870s novel about deceit in upper-class New York. A long way from “The Departed”.
Remember to check back every day for your guide through the summer TV jungle.
