Fashion and Politics: The New Jackie O

August 8th, 2008 Written by: Jasmine Johnson· No Comments

You may have heard supports and pundits suggesting that Barack Obama’s charisma, charm, and politics are reminiscent of the much loved John F. Kennedy. The comparisons are fair, even if you’re only using Obama’s command of a crowd and tendency to inspire hope and personal accountability as a measure.

There is another connection between the two politicians, however this one has less to do with international relations than twin sets and A-line skirts. Vanity Fair’s 68th Annual International Best Dressed List counts Michelle Obama as one of the top style icons, a title Jackie Kennedy Onassis still holds to this day.

Both women’s wardrobes favor clean lines, classic colors, turtleneck sweaters, and no patterns. I’m not sure Michelle is the trendsetter Jackie O. was, or if her chic style stands out because it’s been about 4 decades since a politician’s wife hasn’t looked frumpy or stiff.  Setting trends or not, Mrs. Obama compliments her husband well and looks amazing every time she makes a public appearance.

As I scoured through pictures of Jacqueline Kennedy and Michelle Obama for this post, I noticed something else they both share that stands out more than their penchant for pearls: they loved their husbands. The touching, the glances, and sweet smiles are sincere and send the message that these women know something that the public doesn’t about their powerful husbands. And it appears to be something good.

The September issue of Vanity Fair will be on the news stands next month.
