Having the good fortune to live just blocks away from someone who makes the freshest, chewiest, most ridiculously soft and sexy coconut macaroons is just plain great luck. But when that neighbor then takes a chance and hires you to photograph the heavenly things, ah, that’s something different. That’s just straight awesome. Not only was I lucky enough to do something I love, I was introduced to this seriously amazing little treat.
Susan Hecht has created “MyMacs“, her pretty much flawless incantation of the classic coconut macaroon, both plain and chocolate dipped, and has just started selling them at what is now the new Sherman Oak’s Farmer’s Market. At last, we have our own Farmer’s Market! Double hurrah for this week!
Alongside rows and rows of sweet smelling peaches and paint-box colored berries, hand cut french fries, donuts and freshly made pupusas, these rich little coconut cookies are right at home. I’m a sucker for a simple recipe being made as best as it can be made, and Susan’s macaroons fit the bill, big time. Chewy, sweet and shouting with fresh coconut flavor, I have a new favorite king. I used to hail the macaroons at Canter’s Deli for being the best but these little darlings knocked that crown off so fast I can’t even remember what Canter’s is good for anymore. (Oo I know! Best damn ceiling in LA).
The Farmer’s Market runs every thursday from 5-9pm behind the Bank of America at the corner of Woodman and Riverside (right next to the Fashion Square Mall), and it was a delightful blessing to stroll around during balmy twilight time rather than a beastly 12 o’clock meltdown. Bacon wrapped sausages snapped on the grill and filled the air with smoky sweetness making the whole shebang feel as laid back and welcoming as backyard summer bbq.
I’ll see you there next week with loads of cash and plenty of “green” shopping bags!
