Rockin’ Thai Food: Toi on Sunset

August 11th, 2008 Written by: Laura Leigh· No Comments

Toi on Sunset came very highly recommended from a friend. The atmosphere’s great, the food is greater, and she even got to meet Quentin Tarantino in a daring after-dinner introduction during which she referred to him as “Quenti.” This being said, I don’t take Thai recommendations lightly; it is one of my favorite cuisines.

My friend Ellie and I got there around 8:15 on a Thursday night. There were some people crowding around the entrance and we worried there would be a wait, but we followed the instructions on the sign out front to wait for the doorman who showed us right to our table.

Toi was fairly crowded, but they had cleverly separated all parties with the empty tables, so no one was too close together. The music was blasting, we found ourselves nearly yelling, but given the atmosphere it didn’t bother me. Toi has an old-school, punk/rock & roll theme, with huge move posters and paintings all over the place, including a gigantic portrait of John Lennon that I was quite partial to. The original Batman series was playing on a TV behind Ellie. If you happen to be on a bad date Toi has plenty to capture your attention. Even the patrons were too cool for me. Everyone looked famished ’cause they’d just wrapped a music video or had just locked up their tattoo parlors for the night. Remember that female wrestler Chyna? She was there. Ellie recognized her first because I never notice anyone.

Ellie: “That’s Chyna”

Me: “The wrestler?”

Ellie, laughing: “Yea.”

Me: “She’s one of those old celebrities, like she should be on that show for people who used to be famous.”

Ellie “The Surreal Life”

Me “Yes!”

Ellie, laughing again: “She was, that’s why I recognize her.”

Anyway, celebrity sightings aside, we decided to split the Pad Kee Mao (spicy flat noodles with basil) and the Garlic & Pepper Meat. We chose chicken for the noodles and beef for the meat dish. (They make every menu item as a vegetarian option as well.)

The dishes were huge but I’m not kidding when I say we ate positively every bite. The food was that delicious. I love Thai flat noodles, but if I had to pick one as my favorite, the meat dish was something different than usual and it was incredible. The beef was tender and smothered in their special sauce and the onions and peppers were abundant- but they didn’t try to load the plate with them and skimp on the rest. The guy who served us was helpful with our questions and provided great service.

Toi was one of those rare places in LA that’s not only a great time but really does serve sensational food. I am planning another visit so I can drag pretty much everyone I know because I am certain they will be impressed. I also can’t wait to try more of their Thai creations.
