Every night until summer ends you need look no further for your daily guide through the summer TV jungle.
This is a rough time for nightly entertainment with the tube awash in repeats and lame reality shows, but there’s still good stuff available to get you through the work week.
Let the picks begin. . .
Olympic Games
The Olympics are back in full swing. Here’s what you can see and where you can see it tonight:
- NBC is running Gymnastics, Swimming, Beach Volleyball, and Diving from 8:00-11:00 and CNBC has Softball and Boxing from 9:00-11:00
Reality Rundown
- The most gripping and emotional reality show on television continues its new season tonight at 9:00 on A&E. This new episode of “Intervention” takes a look at Alison, A former pre-med student began inhaling a chemical to deal with a childhood trauma and her parent’s divorce. For those who’ve never watched the series, it’s an incredibly raw look at the power of addiction and how it ravages families.
- Speaking of ravaging families, aren’t kids a pain? So send in the newest nanny reality show to enter the fray. This one is called “Take Home Nanny” and it’s on TLC tonight at 8:00. In this new episode, child-care expert Emma Jenner takes a father control three clingy girls.
News & Docs
- From the guilty pleasure file, I must recommend a new installment of the televangelist series, “Jack Van Impe Presents” on TBN tonight at 10:00. This show masquerades as a newscast with the preacher’s wife, Rexella, reading news stories and Van Impe showing in the most incredibly vague way possible how they were foretold in the Bible. Example: Stephen Hawking wrote a few months ago that soon we may have to live in colonies on space stations, which caused Van Impe to cite a passage in which Jesus said nothing more than, “Look to the sky!” Basically, you can use anything to predict anything if you make it vague enough.
- HBO continues its series of 75-minute documentary films with “Children of the Agape Choir” tonight at 9:00. This picture looks into the children of the South African choir as they record a new CD and plan for a charity drive.
Scripted Bliss
- I’ll skip angling for a date with the incredibly talented star of “The Middleman”, Natalie Morales (e-mail me) for a week and instead recommend two series pilots.
- If you’re a fan of “My Name is Earl” or “Californication” tonight is the chance to see where they started. Both pilot episodes are re-airing tonight at 10:30. “Earl” on TBS and “Californication” on Showtime.
- Most people have seen “Earl” but if you’ve never watched David Duchovny’s brilliant series that debuted last season, this a great chance to enter the world of his Hank Moody as he bashes L.A. and sleeps with every living woman in the city.
Free Movie of the Night
- Not many good movies tonight so let’s go back to the guilty pleasure well with “Bride of Chucky” at 8:00 on AMC. Ya can’t win ‘em all.
