News: The Skinny on What You Need to Know in the World Today

August 12th, 2008 Written by: Mali· No Comments

  • US guns with Mexican cartel - Well we’ve made it impossible for people who want to work in our country to cross the border BUT much easier for high-powered automatic weapons and ammunition to cross. Such weapons can easily cross the border, virtually unchecked into Mexico, fueling a war among drug traffickers, the army and police that has left thousands dead.
  • Art looks at immigration (Photo from exhibit featured right)-Just to contrast that, you have a bunch of bone-chilling artwork of migrants almost have become cliches in our globalized world of perpetual human movement: Mexican families sloshing across the Rio Grande in the dead of night, young African men huddled over dull campfires in Spanish detainee camps. But other, less commonplace images challenge preconceived ideas of what it means to be an “undocumented worker,” “illegal alien” or simply a person with no fixed home or identity, stranded between shifting borders.

  • Bush more or less tries to boss the world - “Bad, Russia, BAD!” (Not an exact quote but almost). In Washington, President Bush said it appeared Russia was planning to overthrow the government of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, a strong U.S. ally. Using unusually blunt language, he demanded that Russia “reverse the course it appears to be on,” but did not say what the United States might do otherwise.
  • Both presidential candidates Obama and McCain condemn the conflict in Georgia from two very different perspectives - McCain, lashed out at Russia’s “path of violent aggression” and warned of “severe, long-term negative consequences” for U.S.-Russia ties. Obama, also called for an end to Russian hostilities saying: “We seek a future of cooperative engagement with the Russian government and friendship with the Russian people.” He said Russia could play its “rightful role as a great nation — but with that role comes the responsibility to act as a force for progress.”
  • Bush administration changes endangered species law - Bush doesn’t really think he should control the laws over endangered species. He’ll let those who are building in such areas to make up their own minds because they have NOTHING to lose by killing species. Sounds like a good plan! The Bush administration wants federal agencies to decide for themselves whether highways, dams, mines and other construction projects might harm endangered animals and plants. New regulations, which don’t require the approval of Congress, would reduce the mandatory, independent reviews government scientists have been performing for 35 years, according to a draft first obtained by The Associated Press.

In other news:

  • Volcanic ash causes flights to be canceled - Last week the Kasatochi volcano in the Aleutian Islands causing flights from LAZ to have to be canceled today. A sky-high plume of volcanic ash prompted Alaska Airlines to cancel 41 flights, bound for various destinations in Alaska.
  • Gasoline prices go down - Gas prices are falling… (YAY!) The average price of gasoline nationally tumbled to $3.809 a gallon today, falling 7 cents in as many days. In California, the cost of self-serve regular averaged $4.118 a gallon, down 8.7 cents from last week. That’s still $1.19 above the year-earlier price (boooo).
