Tonight on TV: Michael Phelps, Evolve, Star Wars

August 12th, 2008 Written by: Andrew· No Comments

August is finally here which means the baseball playoff race is heating up, football is on its way back and, most importantly, the new TV season is almost here.

That doesn’t mean, however, that we’ve escaped the hell onscreen that is the endless reality programming and reruns of the summer. We must soldier on for a few more work weeks until all our favorite shows come back in September to make the drudgery more bearable.

But don’t despair, below are enough good shows for tonight to get you through at least this evening.

Olympic Games

  • Tonight on NBC it’s Gymnastics, Swimming, Beach Volleyball and Diving from 7 until Midnight. See if Michael Phelps can keep his dream of eight gold medals alive after the eye-popping finish to last evening’s 4 x 100 relay.
  • CNBC has Softball and Boxing starting at 9:00.

Reality Rundown

  • Fans of “Making the Band” are in for a Diddy-sized treat as MTV rolls out a one-hour retrospective on the series thus far in anticipation of the new season. “Making the Band: Greatest Hits” bows tonight at 9:00.
  • People like me who love to drool over really nice houses should tune into a brand new episode of “Million Dollar Listing” on Bravo at 10:00. Tonight, real estate agent Josh tries to make things right with Dr. Sam by finding him the perfect condo.

News & Docs

  • A couple of cool nature series on tonight. The first is “Killing for a Living” on Animal Planet tonight at 8:00. This series has been on for over a decade on smaller outlets and makes its big-time cable debut tonight with an episode about how animal species prey on their own kind.
  • Then at 10:00 on The History Channel check out Mike Huckabee’s least favorite show, “Evolve”. Tonight’s installment looks at how development of the jawbone allowed predators to thrive against their prey.

Scripted Bliss

  • It seems everyone’s scared of the Olympics tonight as there are no new scripted shows on the docket for this evening worth recommending. But if you’re hungry for anything scripted, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” is on ABC Family at 8:00 and “Eureka” is new on SciFi at 9:00.

Free Movie of the Night

  • Nobody ever thought we’d see the day that a Star Wars movie would come out in theaters and nobody would care, but this weekend’s “The Clone Wars” has done just that. Travel back to a time when it was still the biggest thing in the world with “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” on SpikeTV tonight at 9:00. Best of all, you can change channels when Jar-Jar comes on screen.

Remember to check back every day for your guide through the summer TV jungle.
