Literary Round-Up: Of Lives Lost, Verbal Calisthenics, Parallel Allusions…

August 13th, 2008 Written by: Lindsey Darden· 1 Comment

This week in the literary world revolves around the power of expression while time is still available; and of personal experiences, of others and of self. Both function seamlessly with the phenomenon of energy exchange, and are of great impact in the auditory realm and on the printed page. Of course, we’ve found yet another book sale for your inner pack rat. Keep hoarding, my pretties.

  • Signing and Discussion | Thursday, August 14, 2008 | Book Soup - Map | Josh Frank signs and presents In Heaven Everything is Fine, a book that delves into the unsolved murder of Peter Ivers (and therefore reopening the case), while paying homage to his influence on pop culture in the 70s and 80s by way of the New Wave Theater - most definitely a welcome, chaotic orchestration. For more info, call (310) 650-3110.

  • Open Mic | Friday, August 15, 2008 | 7:00 pm (sign-ups at 6:30) | Barnes & Noble Bookstore, Encino - Map | I’ll tell you a secret: not always, but sometimes the best part of being a writer/artist being given opportunity stretch out your vocal chords and express your work, from scribbled inked-on mental spillings to stirring phrase. Especially when it doesn’t cost you a cent. For more info, call (818) 380-1636.
  • Used Book Sale | Saturday, August 16, 2008 | 10:00 am - 2:00 pm | Sylmar Branch Library - Map | Much more than books will be available (read: DVDs and CDs), and of course you can rely on ol’ faithful paperbacks and hardcovers, ranging from fifty cents to one dollar. For more info, call (818) 367-6102.
  • Open Mic | Sunday, August 17, 2008 | 9:00 pm (sign-ups at 8:30) | Los Angeles Bahai Center - Map | The Bahai Center in Los Angeles has been dubbed the “Crimson Spot”, and it consists of one of the coolest groups of cats around, inciting feelings of safety and harmony among all age groups. Whatever your vehicle, talent and expression via music, rap, spoken word, poetry Is highly encouraged. As far as the location is concerned, you probably wouldn’t have even guessed it was so central, but isn’t that always the way? For more info, call (323)
  • Book Signing and Discussion | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 7:30 pm | Barnes & Noble Bookstore, The Grove - Map | Richard Murphy - author, screenwriter, and former contractor - will be reading from and sign copies of his new book, Confessions of a Contractor. Imitation (of one’s own experiences, perhaps) being the sincerest form of flattery, I presume? Perhaps a reading of the book will reveal parallel allusions - always a draw-in factor. For more info, call (323) 525-0270.933-8291 ext. 112.
