August is finally here which means the baseball playoff race is heating up, football is on its way back and, most importantly, the new TV season is almost here.
That doesn’t mean, however, that we’ve escaped the hell onscreen that is the endless reality programming and reruns of the summer. We must soldier on for a few more work weeks until all our favorite shows come back in September to make the drudgery more bearable.
But don’t despair, below are enough good shows for tonight to get you through at least this evening.
Olympic Games
- There’s more Phelps Phever on NBC tonight as the swimmer goes for two more gold medals. Also on the peacock network are Gymnastics, Beach Volleyball, Diving and Cycling. It all starts at 8:00 and goes till 12:30.
- CNBC again has Softball and Boxing starting at 9:00.
Reality Rundown
- Very scant for every other category tonight as the Olympics have sent other networks running for the hills. Amazingly, reality restricts itself to one channel this evening with a new episode of “Dog the Bounty Hunter” followed by back-to-back episodes of “Criss Angel: Mindfreak” on A&E at 9:30.
- Dog’s crew is after a woman who’s been convicted of check fraud. For Angel, it’s an escape from a barrel that’s about to fall followed by his being cremated alive. And you thought your job was tough.
News & Docs
- On TruTV watch as oil tanker pilots take ships through the deadliest canals on the planet in “One False Move: Deadly Crossing” at 10:00. Maybe afterwards you’ll stop blaming the Exxon Valdez guy.
- Discovery Channel’s true sci-fi series (an oxymoron, true), “NextWorld”, takes a look at Future Intelligence tonight at 8:00. This installment takes a look at how new technology could someday put robot helpers in homes and connect entire cities to the Web. So we’re only a few years from The Matrix.
Scripted Bliss
- Absolutely no new scripted programming tonight. What a tragedy. Instead, why not go back in time with two episodes of “Home Improvement” followed by a double shot of “George Lopez” on Nickelodeon starting at 9:00.
Free Movie of the Night
- It’s time to cry tonight with one of the best ever adaptations of a play for the big screen. Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Aykroyd hit the road on CMT tonight at 8:00 in “Driving Miss Daisy”. If you’ve never seen the film, it’s a brilliant examination of social change throughout the early part of the 20th century as told through the relationship between an elderly Jewish woman in the south and her black driver. Plus, it won Best Picture in 1989.
- Remember to check back every day for your guide through the summer TV jungle.
