Well, well, well, it’s been another week and She-Who-Kissed-A-Girl-&-Shall-Not-Be-Named is still #1 on the chart. In a last-ditch effort to remain positive I’ve decided to take the constructive criticism/commentary of a one Ms. Liana Aghajanian. She commented on my She-Who-Kissed-A-Girl-&-Shall-Not-Be-Named article last week saying the only song on Billboard that deserved to be on the list was Paper Planes, by M.I.A.
This week on Billboard’s Hot 100, at #16 is Paper Planes. Had it not been for Aghajanian, I would never have given M.I.A. a second thought. Her style is new and interesting; it vaguely reminds me of Peaches. She has actually toured with Peaches. Born Mathangi Arulpragasm [July 17th, 1977] in London and of a Sri Lankan Tamil ethnicity, M.I.A. uses her multicultural background as a foundation for most of her work. Her lyrical content ranges from global politics, violence, and poverty to her issues with the war on terror. Her songs sound dance-able [if you're high on X] and shallow at first play; when you read them over you can’t miss the dark tension when she sings about gas, bureaucracy, and ‘the’ system.
As for Liana Aghajanian, [check her out at http://www.writepudding.com] I have to agree with her comment, Paper Planes gives all 15 of the songs ahead a run for their money. If we paid attention to what people were saying, it’d be Number One. Instead, we’re kissing girls. Liana and I will have to sit down, have a meal and share our frustrations with our music-devoid-of-all-quality preferences. Ugh.
Paper Planes - M.I.A.
I fly like paper get high like planes
If you catch me at the border I got visas in my name
If you come around here I’ll make em all day
I’ll get one done in a second if you wait
Sometimes I think sitting on trains
Every step I get till I’m clocking that game
Everyone’s a winner, we’re making our fame
Bonafide hustler making my name
All I wanna do is
[ gun shots ]
And a
[load up, ka-ching]
And take your money
Pirate skulls and bones
Sticks and stones and weed and bombs
Running when we hit em
A little poison for the system
No one on the corner had swagger like us
Hit me on my banner pre paid wireless
We pack and deliver like UPS trucks
Already going haul
Just pumping that gas
M.I.A.
A third world democracy
Yeah I got more records than the KGB
So uh, no funny business
You already are
Some some some I some I murder
Some I some I let go

Wow Allison! I didn’t know I was going to be part of your editorial! I am glad you liked MIA. Her style takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get it, it’s amazing. I will gladly share a meal (and frustrations!) with you any day
