Having spent a disproportionate share of my lifetime at the mall, I can repeat normal mall business hours backwards, forwards and in my sleep. 10am to 9pm, Monday through Friday, weekend and holiday hours vary. For your average shopper during the non-holiday period, that is more than enough time to get your goods and go home. But what about movie-goers? After catching an 8pm movie, they exit at 10pm only to find locked doors and restaurants packing up for the night. If you’re lucky, the soft pretzel shop might still be serving.
It was on an occasion not entirely unlike this that I discovered Monsieur Marcel on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Gaucho Grill, Monsoon and Travestere (Yankee Doodles was not an option) were all closed and we were about to head home for the night with stomachs growling. While debating who was going to have to cook dinner from the contents of our barren refrigerator, we walked right into the outside-seating only Monsieur Marcel, on the backside of the newsstand at Arizona. The host said that if we could get our order in by 10:30pm (it was 10 at the time) he could absolutely serve us from the whole menu.
Anticipating some low-quality mall eats, we were pleasantly surprised by the wide selection of reasonably-priced wines and French bistro-inspired menu, including chalkboard specials. There was the ever-present Moules Frites and Croque Monsieur, but also several different sandwiches and salads. The portions are oversized and easily large enough to share and while it isn’t cheap, it is far from unreasonable. House wines are about $6 a glass, and a couple could easily eat a complete meal with wine for under $50.
